From the FB page of Breaking the Silence::
The IDF Spokesperson has just released its account of the incident in which 15 rescue workers were killed in Gaza. In a word? Cover-up.
The investigation is riddled with contradictions, vague phrasing, and selective details. The only "serious" disciplinary action taken: the dismissal of the deputy commander of Golani’s elite unit. His reported “failure” was submitting an incomplete account of the incident. In other words, he lied.
We all remember when the IDF claimed that the ambulances emergency lights weren’t on — and then we saw the footage proving otherwise. Not every lie has a video to expose it, but this report doesn’t even attempt to engage with the truth.
Another day, another cover-up. More innocent lives taken, with no accountability.
Bonus: The report dedicates an entire paragraph to praising the dismissed officer. Here's a part of it:
“The deputy commander of Golani's elite unit is a highly decorated officer, whose military service and personal story reflect a spirit of combat, volunteerism, and deep dedication.”

This one was hard.

I wrote about being the wrong kind of victim.

The kind who stayed. The kind who didn't call the police. The kind who texted three days after.

And yes, it might make you feel uncomfortable, but it's the experience of many, many victims. So important to understand.

Breaking the Silence (on FB):

The following statement was published in #Haaretz’s #Hebrew print edition on Friday, in collaboration with many of our partners in #Israeli civil society.

“Say no to the Israeli government’s policy of death

Tens of thousands of deaths, entire cities razed, millions of human beings emaciated from hunger, hostages abandoned to suffer and die - none of this satisfies the bloodlust of the #Netanyahu-Ben Gvir government.

For the sake of its political survival, and in the name of the war of attrition it declared against the Palestinian people, the Israeli government is prepared to continue committing the gravest crimes.

This is what dictatorship looks like - when a leader is prepared to trade in human blood for his own selfish interests.

It’s time to say loud and clear: We will not continue to follow him on this path of doom.

We all have a duty to resist the Netanyahu-Ben Gvir government’s policy of death.

The phrase: “Messing with the ground” (Breaking the Silence)

———

A testimony from an Israeli (ex-?)soldier with a rank of Captain, serving in 2024:

“…’Messing with the ground;’ … It could be a million things ... [But in Gaza,] messing with the ground is a code name for planting an explosive device, always. That’s the suspicion, … all kinds of overhead drone footage, you see it from a distance, in two dimensions. … you don't really have the ability to see what a person is doing; you can only suspect and run through a risk management assessment ... Given that the [off-limits ] Netzarim Corridor … if someone enters it and messes with the ground, it’s grounds for opening fire. You don’t know that he’s planting an explosive device. It could be a civilian, in varying percentages. And the numbers …[given to] the public … “We killed X number of terrorists” … it’s total bullshit, because we don’t know…”

Interview: The director of B’Tselem, Yuli Novak, fled Israel in 2022 after a campaign by Israeli politicians calling her a traitor.

As a former Zionist, Novak discusses the nature of Israeli militarism & what it means to be a human rights defender in Israel after October 7.

B’Tselem documents human-rights violations committed by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Al JazeeraHas democracy failed in Israel? Fatima Bhutto & Yuli NovakFatima Bhutto interviews Israeli political activist Yuli Novak on Zionism, Israeli militarism and the cost of dissent.

College Tour of Nieuwsuur? Reikt de CIDI-inloed dan écht *zó* ver?

Het, volgens o.a. Zo ontvluchtte Yuli Novak Israël in 2022.

• NOS, 2016: "Critici in Israël: mensenrechtenactivisten of landverraders?" (nos.nl/artikel/2103896-critici);

• NOS, 2017: "Premier Netanyahu zegt gesprek met Duitse minister af" (nos.nl/artikel/2170096-premier);

• NRC, 2014: "Het leger trekt geen morele grens meer, meent oud-luchtmachtofficier Yuli Novak" (nrc.nl/nieuws/2014/07/31/israe, alt: archive.is/9v45W);

• Volkskrant, 2015: "Israëlische veteranen: leger schoot lukraak op burgers" (volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergro, alt: archive.is/jgFup)

• Trouw, 2024: "Mensenrechtenorganisatie: Mishandeling Palestijnse gevangenen in Israël gebeurt ‘systematisch’" (trouw.nl/buitenland/mensenrech, alt: archive.is/wqmAe).

Report: The Israeli military veterans’ group, Breaking the Silence, welcomed the ceasefire deal & the end of the "completely avoidable..months of trauma & sorrow”.

Breaking the Silence said Israeli forces “brought many more hostages home in body bags than alive”.

The veterans' group slammed the toxic mix of the settlers' "messianic fantasies" & "Netanyahu’s desperation for political survival."

The man speaking served as a soldier for the Israeli military. His time there turned him into an activist who speaks out against the occupation of Palestine as a member of "Breaking the Silence", an Israeli non-governmental organization established by veterans of the IDF who were horrified by the human rights crimes they committed as soldiers.

In an article for “Le Monde”, cowritten with #AlainPolicar, we deplore disappointing Israeli and Palestinian leaders, and call on Israeli, Jewish and Palestinian organisations to amplify their call for a solution to the conflict.
The paper asks to hear the voices of #standingtogether #breakingthesilence #btselem #aymanodeh #michaelsfard and others.
