#Doorsday bloody Doorsday ... 💀 Oh, let's go!

I am happy to report that my trip to #Augsburg last week was a treasure trove for anyone who loves #doors (aka yours truly)! I only had an hour to explore the old town, but I found so many lovely doors. So behold, here's a badass one! ☠️

This is a #door of the #Stadtmetzg. Can you guess what this listed #historicBuilding used to be? It was built in 1609 as the #butchers' guildhall! I imagine it was deemed too refined for the messy process of slaughtering (this was done in the vicinity), but it was used as a central butchery to store and distribute meat to the city's butchers, using the Lech canal underneath to cool the meat in the basement and dispose of the waste.

The site burned down in 1634 and was rebuilt. In 1720 the Academy of Art moved into the upper floors (very random, I know). With the industrialization, the Stadtmetzg was losing importance and in 1930 it permanently closed. After renovations, it was used as an administrative building by the city of Augsburg. In WWII it was severely damaged, but once again restored. Today it is still in use as an administrative building.

Sorry for the long post, there's just so much to tell. 🫣 To any Augsburgers out there: I hope I got the facts straight!

Day 23 of 30 Days of Local Food: ForeQuarter Butcher Shop

When the price of meat began rising, I shifted most of my meat budget to local independent butchers who focus on locally sourced products. If I'm paying more, I figure I should support those who treat and feed their animals and birds well. Happy animals produced happy meat, as I say. I bounce around – we’re lucky to have choice – but over the past six, eight months, I’ve pretty much found myself returning time and time again to ForeQuarter. The meats are sourced from local/nearby farmers, committed to ethical and sustainable practices. The quality and flavour are so much better than what’s in those plastic-wrapped trays that sit under fluorescent lights. Plus, the folks there are just lovely.

Today in Labor History January 26, 1897: the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America received a charter from the American Federation of Labor to organize “every wage earner from the man who takes the bullock at the house until it goes into the hands of the consumer.” The union merged with the Retail Clerks International Union in 1979 to form the United Food and Commercial Workers.

In this documentary video, you can see what can happen to butchers who don’t have union protection: youtube.com/watch?v=iM2VBAO8Gv
