#DEA Ends #BodyCamera Program After #Trump #ExecutiveOrder — ProPublica

An internal email obtained by ProPublica said the agency made the change to be “consistent” with a Trump executive order. But at least two other federal law enforcement agencies are still requiring body #cameras.

Monocle redesigned their website. Well done.

Oh, and they have this lovely article on the Pentax 17 film camera.

> Smartphones have changed the way we take pictures. But Pentax thinks that there is still a place for the tactile pleasures of manual photography. The solution? A phone-inspired film camera.

Monocle · The Pentax 17 film camera is bringing a digital generation back to analogue By Hugo King

I’m unsure I’d make _that_ particular choice, but if you’re interested in a third-hand M Typ-240 body (they’re from 2013; I’ve owned this one since 2016), let me know. It is indeed a lovely thing, as Leica cameras are.

Has anyone tried using a Raspberry Pi 4 with a Camera Module as an outdoor security camera?

I have the software side sorted out (mediamtx on the Pi, Frigate on the NAS/NVR), but the hardware part is left. I have a few Pi 4s, and I have the NoIR Camera Module v3.

I'm mostly looking for a case that can hold both the Pi and the camera together, and can be mounted in different ways.

A ready case or a 3D print blueprints will be fine.

“This time I spent more time in #Hangzhou, the hometown of #Geely, the company that had invited me to AutoShanghai. Walking around that city of 13 million was a reminder that, when most #cars are #electric, things are much more pleasant.

The #air in Hangzhou is surprisingly clean, the #NoiseLevels low. You can hold a normal conversation even when walking across an open overpass over a busy intersection (though they don’t mind using their horns).

Another thing to note is the extraordinary #cleanliness. There is no graffiti, no vandalism, no obvious #homelessness or #poverty. It feels safe, it feels thoroughly #modern. Our #Marriott hotel, for example, had robots delivering room service. I shared a lift with one, and it chatted away the whole time, though in #Mandarin.

Of course, all this progress and order has been achieved at a great, and many would say unacceptable, price. There are #cameras watching something close to your every move, and people keeping the #score. #FacialRecognition #technology is rampant. It was a requirement to be scanned to enter #AutoShanghai.”

The (car) #future isn’t the #USA.

I received an old Canon 5D mark ii today. A camera released in 2009. And except for a little speed and low light capabilities, it has absolutely everything I need for my regular, manual mode, shooting style.

Every camera since then has basically just become more cluttered and complicated. I suppose that is progress.

(OK, I would have liked to move control of ISO to the back wheel. Canon fixed that by the time of my 2012 6D.)

This quaint little rangefinder is the Pax M3. Sometimes referred to as the Japanese Leica due to the red dot on the front. It was $12 at a local flea market which I couldn’t say no to. Unfortunately the shutter and focus lever is seized up so it’s out of service at the moment but it had a little surprise inside it. (See pic 4)

The curious side of me wants to see what’s on it, if anything. The pictures have to be at least 50 years old. I’ve heard there are labs that can pull black and white images out of old Kodachrome since K-12 development is long gone.
In any case it’s a very cool piece of history.
