I have written letters to both of my US Senators. Tonight I sent this to Rep Gerry Connolly, my rep in VA District 11. It’s too long. He won’t read all, maybe any, of it. But I had to make sure he heard from me.
Rep. Connolly,
Thanks to changes in districting, I haven't always been your constituent, but I have voted for you every time I was able. I also serve as an Election Officer in Fairfax county and my son has interned for both Virginia Senators at times. I am trying to do my part as an active citizen now and for the future.
Please, sir. Fight. Please do not fear that you might lose SOME voters if your actions are too radical. We stand to lose ALL voters if your actions are too timid.
It is hard to overstate the lawlessness and cruelty that are being meted out daily. The time for bipartisanship is over. We are not trying to get along. We are defending what is left of democracy. It is a fight to end all fights and whether you wish it or not, you are on the front lines. We are counting on you. To treat this administration or Republican lawmakers as good faith actors is foolish. There is ample evidence of their bad faith, selfishness, and corruption. Perhaps not all, but so many that the honest, good faith actors are the exceptions that prove the rule.
Transgender rights are human rights. Climate change is real and demands serious action. The government can serve citizens well and should be funded to do so. Tax the rich. Protect what is left. Use every tool at your disposal and some that aren't.
I believe in a liberal agenda. Not a less conservative one. Democratic lawmakers should be on notice that concerning yourself with the needs of center-right voters or those that are persuadable might cost you the votes of disenfranchised liberal voters like me. If any halfway credible candidate comes forward ready to vigorously advocate for a truly liberal agenda, I am going to vote for them, unless you are similarly liberal. Align yourself closer to Representative Ocasio-Cortez and than to Representative Comer.
I support you and wish you well. Please fight. I would love the opportunity to vote for you again, but that doesn't seem like a sure thing at this moment in history.
