“Building new gas stations now is like building more Blockbusters in the age of Netflix”: It IS puzzling that companies would build gas stations in cities that are working hard to encourage transit-oriented #density, #walkable neighborhoods, #cycling and mixed uses. But should cities ban stations … or let market forces do the work for them? Denver votes … ban. denverite.com/2025/02/18/denve

Denverite · Denver bans gas stations near gas stations (and lots of other places)The new law affects projects that were already proposed, drawing intense criticism from real-estate interests.

Once we simply *cannot* continue to travel so far and so fast with so much stuff, we will realize that rebuilding our population centers to support great #density with greater #dignity is sane, sensible, satisfying, and #sustainable.

#Urbanism IS the future, whether you like it or not. We can do this the right way, or we can do it the painful way. It's up to you, but the choice will be made, with or without you.

I joined a walk audit in my neighbourhood hosted by the local DOT (SDOT) this morning. While many participants expressed strong desires to have sidewalks built, some opposed that idea because they'd "take away parking." Some of them opposed more housing because "those apartments don't have enough parking and residents will park on-street, taking away 'our' space." I mean, like, wow, so you own a portion of the public road? What gives you more right to on-street parking than new residents?

Yes, I said that out loud. They fell silent, except for one person who murmured "Well you could say that."

(1/?) I watch a number of "urbanist" channels on YouTube because I find the subjects of better cities, energy efficiency, and better transit to be interesting and important to our collective future. But while I find a lot to agree with, sometimes I find the presenters and their ideas -- challenging. And today I watched a video by Ray Delahanty, who I've been watching for a long time, and it cheesed me off quite a bit.... (thread)
