It struck me recently that the current drone panic in the USA is oddly familiar.

Then I remembered where I had seen it before. In reports from the 1960s and 1970s when there were floods of UFO sightings. They even had a word for it: "A UFO Flap".

That is what we are seeing now. A Drone Flap. 50% misidentification of common objects (weather balloons, aircraft, Venus), 49% mass hysteria, .99% legit drones being used for perfectly legal purposes, and .001% something else.

According to the crazy folk who successfully predicted the #dronepanic in November...

...the ships are going to get bigger in the next few weeks.

The purpose of this toot is to point to it in the near future and to say what an idiot I am to spread this nonsense...

Think of it as a bet where the currency is credibility (of which I have little to lose 😁)

There may or may not be drones doing nefarious things in and around New Jersey, but the vast of things people are flipping out over are regular civilian aircraft (and as many have pointed out, all but the most incompetent threat actors would NOT RUN FUCKING NAV LIGHTS ON THEIR NEFARIOUS DRONES) nytimes.com/2024/12/19/video/n

The New York Times · Videos That Purport to Show Drones in New Jersey Likely Show PlanesBy Alexander Cardia

From @thebaldgeek (2 days ago, probably a helluva lot more now)

This is really upsetting.
There are 94! msg with the word 'laser' in my ACARS msg database right now. I have never, ever, in 7ish years, seen so many uses of the word before!
Look at the scroll bar how often they show up!
The whole drone thing is out of control.
DO NOT SHINE anything into the sky!!!

DHS, FBI, FAA & DoD Joint Statement on Ongoing Response to Reported Drone Sightings

"Having closely examined the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones. We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast."

Dec 12, Flight from Chicago to NJ.
2min, iPhone 17, downscaled for interwebs.
A flight of #UAP pacing a jet plane.

- No FAA lights
- Not Sirius/Venus
- No horizontal separation
- Not a refection
- Consistent with many sightings
- Not a hobby #drone
- Pacing a jet at 800km/h ( that's about x8 faster than your rolling coal tractor)

We used to call these Unidentified Flying Objects, before the word #UFO got memory holed.

Sure, believe these are Mavics flying out of someones garage if it helps you sleep better at night.
If you are an adult though, time to crawl from under your bed,
and start thinking how you are going to handle Ontological shock.

NJ.com: Planes over N.J. hit by lasers as hunt for drones continues

Several pilots flying over New Jersey reported their planes were hit by lasers in recent days, leading aviation officials to warn residents about the dangers of pointing lasers at aircraft.

It is unclear if the laser incidents are related or if they are linked to residents looking for drones in the night sky amid an FBI investigation of more than 3,000 reports of alleged unexplained drone sightings....

Drone Panic

Drones are flying overhead, let's call the FBI
They're hovering high above, blinking lights, according to some random guy
The governor swears he's seen them, never mind those are really stars
Whoever or what creature is driving them, must be put behind some bars
The feds must act! Call the ASPCA! They're above me in the sky
Why is the drone invasion in New Jersey, please please tell me why
I'm firing off lasers at those drones, oops sorry cargo plane
I'm sure laser pointers, will keep them from stealing my broken brain
On the other hand, maybe my brains have already been sucked from my skull
Because all this drone panic, seems us humans are really dull

Meanwhile, the (former) Governor of Maryland apparently saw the constellation Orion and--failing to recognize these as stars--told the world he saw drones (posted over at the Nazi bar). #dronepanic

(Update: added link where it attributes Matthew Cappacci to having pointed out the former Gov. identified the constellation Orion as scary drones) thebaltimorebanner.com/communi
