Geniuses
That is quite the image. I can see the film scene, a long take of Pepys and his two colleagues in their journey on the river, no words spoken, then the view of the dead body on the stairs seen from the boat, still no words spoken.

Strange how a couple billionaires drowned in their luxury cabins while on holiday generate so much more interest than a couple hundred desperate migrants drowned in the barred hold of a derelict fishing boat while looking for a better life.
Very strange.
It is terrifying to hear about someone jumping in a river and never coming up to the surface and having no idea of what happened other than maybe something to do with fast underwear currents. I might jump into a river someday!

"Couple drowns in rip current while on vacation with their kids in Florida"
These people did not have to die. If you listen to the news piece, you'll learn that they just did not know how to handle a rip current.
Don't fight it!
Don't FUCKING fight it!
You let the current take you out. Then you swim parallel to the shore, and when you're far enough you can swim back to the shore.
They did not have to drown...

This article struck home. Ten years ago, my son started to drown in our backyard pool in the presence of eight adults and four teens on Christmas Day.
He’d been playing with his two older cousins, they’d lost interest and drifted into the deep end, chatting. He tried to swim to them. I came out of the house and saw him in trouble, just as my mum thought, “he’s too quiet” and turned around and scooped him out. We were lucky to catch it in time.
Drowning is fast and silent. Watch your kids.

This isn’t a shit on other parents / holier than thou from me. I’ve sat at the beach. I’ve watched others for a long time at the beach. And I’ve used my phone while sitting at the beach, though our kid doesn’t swim there. 30 secs isn’t that long. What’s 45 seconds right? It’s like driving and using a cellphone. I’ve done it and now I don’t. Ever. Driving or at a beach with the kid. Shit happens so fast #ottawa #kids #drowning
Biked by Britannia Beach today with 2 fire trucks, 5 cop cars and 3 paramedic vehicles all lights and sirens blaring. Apparently a neighbourhood kid is in critical condition after presumably being found unresponsive in the water. Fuck I hate this. It’s so common and yet so easy to avoid and I’ll stake my claim that the beach is one area where phones should just be banned. It takes no time for shit like this to happen with aspirated water in the lungs #ottawa #drowning #kids
How to recognise when someone's drowning - which doesn't look like most people would imagine.
A useful article to read or re-read at the start of summer!

'BYU research finds that more than 1,000 people have drowned because of low-head dams. In a massive effort to prevent future tragedies, BYU professor Rollin Hotchkiss created a national task force, and with the help of BYU students, built the first nationwide database cataloging the location of more than 13,000 low-head dams.'
This is an excellent article on how to spot #drowning - it doesn't look like it does on TV.
As the weather gets better and we're all around the water, make sure you know what to look for.
