Our not-so-happy, five year old English #Bulldog, presenting her unamused sideeye to the camera...

She loves sitting on the couch together with her (pet) humans, but these days she is not allowed up without wearing diapers... which (apparently) is nothing less than a mortal humiliation!

If dogs had thumbs, she would have picked up a phone and reported us for animal cruelty long ago! 😬😄🩸🩸🩸

“If I fits, I sits”, #EnglishBulldog edition.

Bertie has 6 beds scattered around the house. One in our respective home offices, one in the daylight basement space, one in the living room, and comfy beds in each of his crates (living room and bedroom). Bertie is also allowed to sprawl on the sofa in the living room. He has an abundance of resting places.

Ursa has one bed. It is in my wife’s office, often to one side of the desktop to try and lure him away from sleeping on her hands.

Occasionally she needs floor and/or desk space and sets Bertie’s bed on edge against a shelf and Ursa’s bed on the floor. Occasionally we get these hilarious results. #DogsOfMastodon #SeniorPupSunday

Tryon Creek State Park was busy on this holiday. People asking if you’re about to leave the parking lot busy, which is par for the course at this very popular park. While the trails were busy, they didn’t feel too crowded.

1.4 miles, 174 feet of elevation gained. A longer hike for us all today.

Bertie enjoyed all the people and tried to knock a golden retriever over. So a perfect day as far as he’s concerned.

Bulldogs don’t play like other dogs. There is no play bow, no belly display. There’s also no tail to communicate intent. Bertie often just angers or intimidates other dogs. We passed a smaller terrier who crouched down in a cower when they saw Bertie coming down the trail.

How do bullies play? They run right at you, head down to smash like a bighorn sheep. They like knocking each other over. They will head but to knock a dog down, then roll the other dog over, then stand over the dog they’ve rolled. Other bullies think this is a riot.

Bertie plays like this with the cat in addition to grooming his kitty. Ursa usually tolerates being groomed for a short while before escaping.

Today marks a year since I lost my best friend Foxxy Cleopatra, and not a day goes by.

Some days I awake and forget she’s no longer with us, and think like I’m going to be consumed by grief.
I miss her very much, but I’m grateful that I was loved by and loved the most amazing friend a human could ever ask for. For twelve years, from coast to coast, I carry her forever with me. 🧡🤍🖤
