New image done on my livestream yesterday: The Farmer and the Fox.

This fable involves a farmer who is angry that a fox got into his chicken coop. He captures the fox, ties an oil-soaked rope to its tail, and lights it on fire.

The fox takes off into his wheat fields. And the farmer gets no harvest that year.

Of the many morals apparent: Don’t confuse revenge with justice.

I think that’s an important lesson we need to learn in today’s clime. I think a lot of choices being made by powerful people are clearly not about “justice” but about pettiness. And it’s not hard to tell.

Today, I listed my second pack pf fairy tale greeting cards on my Goimagine Art Shop.

goimagine.com/art-nouveau-fair

This set is the next iteration in my style journey, and I think the cards in it are some of my best work.

The tales include (left to right, top to bottom in the photo): The Lion and the Mouse, The Frog Princess, The Three Little Pigs, The Ugly Duckling, Rapunzel, and The Tortoise and the Hare.

They’re all Human-Made. I paint, print, package, and post them all myself from my own studio. I don’t use any artificial generative nonsense.

You can watch a playlist of all the speedpaints and livestream recordings involved in the making of these pieces here: makertube.net/w/p/2BLLnFELz3bV

Today I share a new print: The Tortoise and the Hare.

It’s 11x17, limited edition of 30, signed & numbered with a cert of authenticity.

I print, pack, and post this from my own studio. It’s Human-Made, with no artificial generative assistance in the process. Here’s the speedpaint: makertube.net/w/hLKS2mwuudyauS

Here are the livestream recordings of when I made it:

Pt 2: makertube.net/w/1idH5Kv2v2UbZ7
Pt 3: makertube.net/w/vmksXKPZRNGqRr

I think this is one of my best pieces.

Got this one done on my livestream this afternoon: The Piglet, the Sheep, and the Goat.

In essence, the fable goes like this: A pig, a sheep, and a goat live together in a pen on a farm. The pig squeals every time the farmer sticks his hand in the pen. One day the sheep and the goat ask why the pig screams to much. “He handles us all the time and we aren’t hurt.”

The pig replies, “But for you, Mr. Sheep, the farmer only wants your wool. And for you, Mrs. Goat, he wants your milk. But there is only one thing he wants from me, and it will be my end.”

The moral being that perspective matters. That we can’t dismiss danger to others simply because we don’t experience it ourselves. That our lived experiences are not equal.

And I think that’s really really important in today’s society. We are experiencing what it’s like to forget that simple truth.

I got this piece done yesterday. It refers to the fable attributed to Aesop, The Wolf and the Lamb, which is particularly relevant to the current cultural zeitgeist.

Very short and worth a read: fablesofaesop.com/the-wolf-and

This piece is Human-Made by me, entirely in Procreate, using 2589 strokes that took 5h 48m to make.

I'm streaming again this afternoon, 1-4:00pm PDT (UTC-7), continuing my piece based on The Wolf and the Lamb fable. I’ll be using it for greeting cards and prints and other stationery stuff.

I’m also going to try again on MakerTube. It was cutting out on my a long while ago, so I stopped. Then it seemed to work again, and then last Wednesday it cut out again. So we’ll see if it actually stays connected this time. My suggestion is for you to keep reload your browser window if it goes out.

I’ll be drinking a pot of tea, listening to soothing music, and generally just relaxing while I’m working. Lurkers are very very welcome!

Got this done on my livestream today: “The Tortoise and the Hare”.

I realized as I was making it that all of my art is rather edgy dark… It sort of straddles fantasy art and kidlit topics and nestles into a weird middles ground that I kind of like.

Even my birds! All spotlighted and surrounded by rich jewel tones… I hadn’t realized it until it hit me today, mid-stream. Huh.

Anyway, I also made this piece into a new greeting card! Woohoo!

I got this new image done today. It’s inspired by fable, The Lion and the Mouse.

I’ve never done a fable before. And I think I really like them. There’s something simple, pure, and spiritual about them that feels a bit forced in fairytales and folktales. They’re clearly much more allegorical. And I think there’s a really strong place for that.

Maybe I’m just getting older? And tire of the antics of so many misguided humans in real life that I long for stories that aren’t ultimately about mistakes made by stupid people?

Maybe.

Regardless, I thought I’d share! Again, it’s in an Art Nouveau-inspired illustrative style. All by me in Procreate—no generative BS. This will be a greeting card soon.

Continued thread

The Snake and the Donkey (2/2)

The more the snake tried hard to make
Affection grow, the more would break
The chance of friendship, trust, and care,
His anger rising everywhere.

The donkey's tricks grew wild and free,
But soon got lost in his own glee,
And in the end, both learned that day
That love must come its very own way.

So listen, children, to this tale:
True kindness never shall prevail
When forced with anger, threat, or might,
But only through a gentle light.

The Snake and the Donkey (1/2)

In a meadow green and bright,
Lived a snake with all his might,
Who wanted love by force and power,
Demanding praise each passing hour.

A donkey near him danced and played,
With tricks and jokes, he never swayed,
He laughed and jumped and made such noise,
Creating chaos, his favorite ploys.

The snake would hiss, "You must adore!"
But love can't come from threats and roar,
The donkey spun and danced around,
His laughter echoing without a sound.

Hah! I just discovered Fable, which is the better version of (boring) Goodreads. But just like the latter, I'll be using it primarily to track my reading progress and goals (note to self: don't let the pressure to read many books get in the way of actually enjoying reading). I also plan to post short book reviews there. And who knows, maybe I'll find a new community!

Anyone here on Fable? How's your experience, so far?
