When I was grown and able to leave Nashville, I discovered that restaurant menus elsewhere were weird. I was used to a menu that had you choose a meat and then three side items from a list. Side items, usually on a board on the wall (sophisticated!), included things like greens, squash casserole, slaw, cornbread and more. You know, regular food.
Turns out this type of menu is called a "Meat and Three" and, while similarly-styled menus can be found elsewhere in The South, the pure form originated in #Nashville. And you can still find 'Meat and Three' restaurants here today. If you visit, put one on your list.
Vegan/vegetarians should be able to get a "veggie plate".
(Pro tip: Squash casserole is awesome)
