"That inquiry led the #FTC to conclude that "widespread adoption of this practice [AI surveillance pricing] may fundamentally upend how consumers buy products and how companies compete."

"In the press release, the anti-monopoly watchdog, the American Economic Liberties Project, was counted among advocacy groups endorsing the Democrats' bill. Their senior legal counsel, Lee Hepner, pointed out that "grocery prices have risen 26 percent since the pandemic-era explosion of online shopping," and that's "dovetailing with new technology designed to squeeze every last penny from consumers."

"Hepner pushed lawmakers to support the legislation banning #AI #surveillance #pricing, suggesting that could help "restore fair, transparent, and predictable pricing." Otherwise, "there is no such thing as a good deal when every consumer is charged a different price," Hepner warned."

Ars Technica · Delta’s AI spying to “jack up” prices must be banned, lawmakers sayBy Ashley Belanger

Are you a regular flier on Delta Airlines?
Caveat Emptor!

Beware! Make no mistake. This is Surveillance Pricing! Also known as predatory pricing or gouge pricing. gizmodo.com/delta-wants-20-of-

As sated by the CEO: Delta was “optimizing revenue through [its] partnership with Fetcherr,” and “leveraging AI-enhanced pricing solutions.”

In Surveillance Pricing, retailers are algorithmically tweaking and targeting prices based on a variety of inputs—including consumer-related data and their behaviors and preferences (without consent), the location, time, and channels by which a consumer buys the product.

Today I learned that retailers who use Shopify and Loox have tricks to deceive customers. (1) Shop owners can pack positive reviews at top of displayed reviews. Only 10 featured reviews allowed but if you have 10 products that means the first several pages of reviews will be 100% positive and you are not told they are featured. (2) Shop owners can disable the ability to "sort by review rank." (3) Shop owners can hide review distribution. Sneaky. #shopify #loox #reviews #ftc #ethics #commerce #business

Trump’s #FTC announces #merger condition that prohibits #advertising #boycotts

FTC is approving a merger of big advertising agencies after extracting an agreement that the combined firm won't lead or participate in any advertising boycotts based on #political or ideological viewpoints

The merger condition is a new strategy in the Repub-controlled FTC's fight against alleged advertising boycotts, which could help #Musk 's X social network & #Trump 's own #TruthSocial

@BenBen @fabiscafe @okapi @chesheer I don't deny this to be a problem, far from it.

  • In an ideal world, stuff would be portable enough that the underlying init (and Userland in general) as well as Kernel didn't matter and merely be a different config file.

In reality, a substantial part of #Gnome devs (or at least contributors) are paid by the 3 major #Linux distros (#RHEL, #SLED, #Ubuntu) and whilst not being antragonistic towards #BSD|s don't get employed to enshure it runs on #FreeBSD, but that it runs better on the distro their employer is selling

  • And given that these projects don't have infinite resources and espechally maintainers I don't blame them to redelegate a lot of work to #SystemD instead of reimplementing something themselves.

OFC it's saddening in regards to non-Linux #Unix-esque OSes, but given self-amplifying network effects both the murder of #OpenSolaris at the hands of #Oracle (with @EUCommission and #FTC as enablers!) and @iXsystems ditching #FreeBSD in #trueNAS alongside regressing #driver support for hardware outside of Linux, #macOS and #Windows, it's not a good time for these projects.

  • Which is bad because BSDs and other OSes force Linux to innovate and ' get gud '!
