Many place names were entered into the Erasmus+ database manually resulting in diverse place names containing national spellings, typographical mistakes, character encoding errors, and national scripts, which required manual corrections.</p>

Tuomas Väisänen 📼🧟‍♂️<p>Nothing like <a href="https://vis.social/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a> around 60 000 placenames from an Excel file, which is the product of numerous joined-together Excel files written in a diversity of encoding schemes.</p><p>There are characters out of range in them thar hills.</p><p>Gold, too.</p><p>Maybe.</p>

OpenCage 👉🌍<p>Version 3.2.2 of php-opencage-geocode (the PHP SDK for accessing out geocoding API) has been released with a new method making it easy to set a proxy URL. </p><p>As always all the details of using the. SDK can be found on our PHP tutorial:<br><a href="https://opencagedata.com/tutorials/geocode-in-php" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">opencagedata.com/tutorials/geo</span><span class="invisible">code-in-php</span></a></p><p><a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/php" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>php</span></a> <a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a></p>
Tuomas Väisänen 📼🧟‍♂️<p>Gotta give it out to the <a href="https://vis.social/tags/Photon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Photon</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a> devs and everyone behind the <a href="https://vis.social/tags/GeoPy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GeoPy</span></a> library. What an amazing FREE service.</p><p>Works really well for my use case of identifying places on the level of towns/cities.</p><p>My only gripe is that it struggles slightly with toponyms written in the Greek alphabet. But otherwise it seems to be 95–99 % correct.</p>
Tuomas Väisänen 📼🧟‍♂️<p>It is rather meditative to manually go through placenames written in various languages, correct the spellings, and then geocode them. I got down 500 unique placenames in three hours, the remaining ones 3000ish are ones that have been origins and destinations of 2 or 1 individuals, so I guess this is a good cut-off point, as they won't affect the end result (2.7 million movements) that much.</p><p>Also, I love the <a href="https://vis.social/tags/Photon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Photon</span></a> <a href="https://vis.social/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a> service that <a href="https://vis.social/tags/GeoPy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GeoPy</span></a> can use.</p>
Tuomas Väisänen 📼🧟‍♂️<p>There is something nice about having written, trouble-shot, and refined a <a href="https://vis.social/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a> script for several days, and then finally, you press run, and it just goes!</p><p>On a related note, <a href="https://vis.social/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a> is a swamp, but a fun swamp.</p>
OpenCage 👉🌍<p>14. Final bonus toot - Ireland 🇮🇪 of course has a rich musical tradition, and has gifted the world with some of the best songs about geocoding.</p><p>We close with U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name"</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzZWSrr5wFI" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=GzZWSrr5wF</span><span class="invisible">I</span></a></p><p><a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/geoweirdness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geoweirdness</span></a> <a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a></p>
OpenCage 👉🌍<p>But wait, we're not done! </p><p>v2.2.0 of jopencage, our java SDK just went live as well. The SDK now uses https by default, has a more specific user agent, and there were also lots of dependency upgrades. </p><p><a href="https://opencagedata.com/tutorials/geocode-in-java" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">opencagedata.com/tutorials/geo</span><span class="invisible">code-in-java</span></a></p><p><a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/java" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>java</span></a> <a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a></p>
OpenCage 👉🌍<p>This week in SDK updates we released v2.3.1 of our python SDK (and improvements to the parallel batch requests script that comes bundled with it). </p><p>Main change is making errors more transparent when a user's local SSL certificates are expired/bad. And yes, doing the debugging that lead to these fixes was as much fun as it sounds. *sigh* </p><p>Our python tutorial: <a href="https://opencagedata.com/tutorials/geocode-in-python" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">opencagedata.com/tutorials/geo</span><span class="invisible">code-in-python</span></a></p><p><a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>python</span></a> <a href="https://en.osm.town/tags/geocoding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>geocoding</span></a></p>
