This Is My Glasgow<p>If you examine the northeast corner of the parapet of the Queen Margaret Drive Bridge in Glasgow, you can the granite is covered with pockmarks (top picture). These were caused by shrapnel from a German parachute mine which exploded at 12:40 on the 14th of March 1941. It destroyed a row of tenements on the opposite side of Queen Margaret Road (see maps below), killing one person. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/wwii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wwii</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/queenmargaretdrive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>queenmargaretdrive</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>They were widely used in Scotland for accessing common areas like tenement closes between the late 18th Century and the start of the 20th Century as they were cheaper and more robust than more traditional locks, since they had no moving parts and replacement keys could be simply be cast from existing ones. They were not particularly difficult to circumvent, but they provided a sufficient level of security to deter casual or opportunist thieves.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/odellnightlatch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>odellnightlatch</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/lock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lock</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Odell's nightlatches had a complex-shaped ward inside them (top right - not from the same door) which was mirrored by the spaces in their associated key (bottom right). This allowed a key to be inserted into the base of the T-shaped hole and then be slid upwards over the ward to release the latch (not shown). If the pattern on the key didn't match the shape of the ward, this couldn't be done. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/odellnightlatch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>odellnightlatch</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/lock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lock</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dullmensclub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dullmensclub</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/security" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>security</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tenement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tenement</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/scotland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scotland</span></a></p>
