herphighlights.podbean.com223 Sky-diving Salamanders | Herpetological HighlightsSome tree-dwelling salamanders have a remarkable ability to ‘sky-dive’, controlling their descent after leaping away from predators. New research tests the gliding ability of a number of different species, and finds that some are more adept than others. We follow up with a brand new frog species described from Kangaroo Island, Australia.  Become a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/herphighlights Merch: https://www.redbubble.com/people/herphighlights/shop Full reference list available here: http://www.herphighlights.podbean.com Main Paper References: Brown CE, Sathe EA, Dudley R, Deban SM. 2022. Atop a hill, Kevin watched Asaph lumber about and browse sorghum.
Lurking behind Asaph was a dromeasaur. Red feathered legs but a dark upper half. It stopped when it felt Kevin's scrutiny and ran towards him.
Kevin's heart froze.
It was a dromeaTAUR.
Half 'raptor.
Half human.
Half Joey.
Except he had yellow hunters eyes.
#Gliding from the sky, Foggy thumped onto Kevin's chest over his heart.
"Wake up!" Foggy squeaked.
Kevin gasped.
The dark room was quiet.
Kevin counted his breaths.

While I was out at Western Park in #leicester a couple of hours ago a 'plane' flew over which looked like a glider but had the engine sound of a light aircraft.
<Edited> A!though we were wondering if it might have been a commercial or military drone it now seems as though it was a powered glider <\>
It was too high to see any markings, but not as high as, say, a helicopter might have been.

Mystery solved

And the finale: This wasn’t the last thing I did in New Zealand, but it was probably the most spectacular. A 3 hour, 41-minute flight in a high-performance glider from Omarama. We travelled some 250 km, reached our airspace limit at just shy of 18,000 feet, and had near-perfect mountain wave conditions.

It was the stuff of fantasies - particularly those of the aspiring pilot I was in my teens.
