RaymondPierreL3<p>“The one thing that can stop the rise of the far right is the one thing mainstream parties are currently not prepared to deliver: greater equality. The rich should be taxed more, and the revenue used to improve the lives of the poor. However frantically centrist parties avoid the issue, there is no other way.” (George Monbiot)</p><p>Of course, it’s only come to this due to the lack of <a href="https://aus.social/tags/taxReform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>taxReform</span></a> , progressive social <a href="https://aus.social/tags/legislation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>legislation</span></a> , and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/FinancialRegulation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FinancialRegulation</span></a> action from all govt since the 2008 <a href="https://aus.social/tags/GFC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GFC</span></a> . <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Neoliberalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Neoliberalism</span></a> ,<a href="https://aus.social/tags/CorporateCapitalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CorporateCapitalism</span></a> and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Globalisation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Globalisation</span></a> have been left unfettered to carry on this foolish race to the bottom. </p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Fascism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fascism</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/RWNJs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RWNJs</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Authoritarianism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Authoritarianism</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/PopularPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PopularPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Oligarchy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Oligarchy</span></a> </p><p>Source: <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/apr/13/trump-populists-human-nature-economic-growth" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/commentisfree/</span><span class="invisible">2025/apr/13/trump-populists-human-nature-economic-growth</span></a>?</p>

GeofCox<p>What would a Trump presidency mean for Europe?</p><p>There is no doubt it would be disastrous for Americans, but could it have some positive outcomes for the EU?</p><p>I think it would certainly have the effect of clarifying (what has in fact always been the case) that the US is not a reliable ally - it pursues (what it sees as) its own interests. This is understood, oddly, at both political 'extremes' in Europe - in France in particular the European political centre's acceptance of the dollar's 'reserve currency' status is seen as key to many world problems, from unmanageable debt in the 'global south' to the propagation of neo-liberalism and capitalist globalisation.</p><p>Could Europe instead pursue something like the Keynesian 'bancor' international currency proposal, designed specifically to make world trade more equal?</p><p>Would the European political centre's acceptance of the US as maverick strengthen both such independent economic thinking, and European coherence - pushing current outliers like the UK more towards 'the European Social Model', and deeper co-operation?</p><p>But what of Ukraine? I think It would be pushed towards a negotiated settlement some would see as defeat - but I have to say I've always thought this the inevitable outcome anyway - nor do I believe, given the resistance it has encountered in Ukraine, that Russia would embark on similar military misadventures in future.</p><p><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/EU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EU</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Neoliberalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Neoliberalism</span></a> <a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/Globalisation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Globalisation</span></a></p>
