And with a bit of reflection, maybe Godzilla X Kong isn’t such a bad representation of the Godzilla series as a whole.

It isn’t a perfect film, far from it. Just like it isn’t a perfect series. There are only a handful of truly great films, whilst most are only mildly enjoyable with amazing bits occurring sporadically.

But Godzilla is a great character because he’s adaptable and enduring across all these stories. He can be pushed too far (hello, Godzilla 1998) so it no longer works. But he can also be shockingly relevant to our times when used correctly.

And that’s why I’ve watched 40 weeks of men-in-suits knocking over miniature buildings.

(Rest assured, when a trailer appears for a new film, I *will* go bananas.)

Alright, so I hoped to see this film in a new light, but unfortunately it didn’t really happen.

Definitely loved some parts, but too all over the place for me really to care. I think Kong’s story resonates, but Godzilla’s involvement feels like an afterthought.

Not a franchise-killer (especially when it made so much sense much money), but a refocussing next film would help.
