John Donigian, the senior director of #SupplyChain strategy at Moody’s, said the #tariffs could lead to higher #costs, potential #delays & pressure for #businesses to shift production closer to North America or into the #UnitedStates.

All industries would face unique challenges, he said. For #electronics, moving #production could be #slow & #costly. For #retail & #consumer #goods that try to keep costs low, inventories could fall & consumer #prices rise.

Edward R. Rosenfeld, the chief exec of footwear brand Steve Madden, said that his company currently sourced >70% of its products from #China but had “been planning for a potential scenario in which we would have to move #goods out of China more quickly."

“As of yesterday morning, we are putting that plan into motion,” he said. Steve Madden had been making more shoes in #Cambodia, #Vietnam, #Mexico & #Brazil & its goal over the next year was to reduce its sourcing from China to only 40-45%.

One of the greatest failings of the early #economic #philosophers, was their failure to foresee the impact of de-personalizing #markets.

Back in Smith's time there was an assumption of #honesty on the part of the seller. Markets were small enough that dishonesty would be punished by #buyers not buying the dishonest #sellers #goods.

#Trust is the bedrock of thriving markets. Which is why countries with rigid rules of law and enforcement do better than countries without. You can trust that if you get burned -- there's a #remedy.

But as markets expanded, so did de-personalization. See the "traveling salesman" selling #SnakeOil for example. Burn a bunch of people -- then move on to the next set of dupes.

Add then, the advent of marketing, or as I like to call it, #CapitalistPropaganda. In short, the practice of increasing demand by selling lies -- #BuyerBeware.

Add to that, legal precedent interpreting lies as free speech -- buyer beware.

Add then, #monopoly power, and it's impossible not to see where this is headed.

Today, we have markets of *distrust* because everyone is peddling legal lies.

Give it a name: #PredatoryCapitalism? #CrisisCapitalism? #Conitalism?

It's all the logical end result of rewarding those with the most capital to compete without rules governing the sale of #lies.

Draft continental #strategy on free movement developed

Free Movement of Persons is an integral part of the #African #integration and along with the African #Passport is one of the flagship projects of #Agenda #2063.

Pursuant to this goal of integration, in January 2018 the Protocol to the Treaty establishing the African #Economic #Community relating to free movement of persons, right of residence and right of establishment was adopted by the #AU Assembly. This was followed in March 2018 with the Agreement Establishing the African Free #Trade Area, the Protocol on Trade in #Goods, the Protocol on #Trade in #Services and the Protocol on Rules and #Procedures on the #Settlement of #Disputes.

As a follow up to this, the #AfricanUnion (AU) and the Regional Economic Communities ( #RECs ) have developed a draft joint continental strategy to accelerate the Right of Entry for the Protocol to the treaty establishing the African Economic Communities relating to the Free Movement of Persons, Right of Residence and Right of Establishment. The strategy aims to ensure that RECs and Member States popularise and promote the adopted African Passport as one of the key #mechanisms through which free movement of persons will be realised.

#Trump has floated enacting a “universal baseline #tariff” on virtually all #imports, or ~$3 trillion worth of goods, which would amount to more than a ninefold increase in the amount of #goods subject to tariffs compared w/ his first term. He has also talked about pushing #legislation to have the #UnitedStates automatically impose “reciprocal” tariffs matching those of all countries on US #exports, which would almost certainly lead to a sharp rise of #trade #hostilities.
