Good morning.
Another day of working on my dual gallery show. Starts in a week. 😵
I have several large pieces of artwork almost done. 19"x24", which leaves great space for cropping in the future.

I'm using the Blick Bristol pad 100lb for this. Believe ME, acrylic gouache, acrylic markers, and acrylic paint all work pretty well on this paper. I am getting some curling where I used heavy acrylic marker application. But otherwise, 👍🏿

If you want to use a smooth paper AND use gouache and dip pen, I highly recommend using hot press paper. Either stretch the hot press with water, or get 300 lb (540gsm?) hot press paper.

Hot press watercolor paper is ✨️so nice✨️ but I haven't found a brand where I like how transparent watercolors look on them. Sigh.

Anyways. Did I have other questions I meant to answer for you folks? Do y'all remember? 😅

I think the sizing on the Bristol paper is helping to keep gouache from sinking in and creating a buckled messy paper.

Of course, mixed media paper is your friend when you want to make pieces with wet and dry media. I don't use mixed media paper as much because I love using pen and ink on Bristol. 😅💚

With acrylic gouache, its safe to blend in a wet way when you use a lot of layers. The acrylic binder will protect the lower layers.
(Won't work with watercolors.)

Good morning-afternoon.

So, one if the questions I promised to answer is "Can gouache go on Bristol paper?" I'm using 100lb 270gsm Bristol. Canson, Strathmore, and Blick brand.

The answer is Yes! Just don't use a super lot of water. It has to be a much dryer paint stroke.
It doesn't buckle as if you were using sketch/drawing paper. But it does buckle slightly more than 140lb 300gsm paper.

To me, it is not super concerning. I'm mainly using acrylic gouache tho. Test first!

Had a lot of fun painting these lichen and moss-covered branches and trees based on photos I took on a recent hike~
