Yesterday toured a restored basalt plains #grassland on private land near Bacchus Marsh. It's been more or less in drought since late summer, but there are still some great plants there. Here is Stackhousia subterranea (#Celastraceae), aka Grassland candles. This plant was a rescue transplant from a development site.

From the archives: bird surveys can take you to the most beautiful places. This cattle ranch in #Sonoita, #Arizona at dawn was peppered with pronghorn and full of the buzzing of Grasshopper Sparrows.

I'm so at home at the beach and on the mountains, but even I sometimes feel called to the sea of grass, those endless golden miles where it's just you, the road, and the rolling hills...

Someday, I might spend a whole summer out there. In the meantime, I content myself with the vibe I captured on a shorter trip, which I call "The Drive is Young".

You think you're on the all-American road trip...but there is only the open road, time is measured not in days and nights, and you can all but hear the whispers of founding fathers and rough riders through the seas of grass...

Be it the shadow world or "merely" western Montana, "The Drive is Young...". Keep your hand on the steering wheel...
