A lot of the times I walk past my stack of hats I both yearn for one of those old fashioned hat stands... And think that I should really wear Second Largest Hat more. It's rather large!
The second photo is from the making of, where I sewed on pieces of embroidered lace by hand. There's a bit of veiling on top of it I've since changed my mind about, but I haven't changed it because I don't wear it!

The lowest one, hanging on for dear life at a jaunty angle, has gold, silver and purple botanical embroidery on it, and a sort of tan veiling with bobbles. The two on top, sort of substantial hats themselves, look absolutely tiny in comparison. The coat rack is full of coats, and in the background is a cute white dresser, a quilt covered bed with throw pillows, and an overflowing laundry tote bag with pink socks topmost in it.
A close up photo of the lowermost hat when still being made. A deep upturned brim, a sort of minutely checked gray wool fabric, is partially covered and decorated with embroidered flowers on netting. Only some of the flowers have been meticulously hand sewn with whipstitch around them, the supporting netting still on there. To the right, a cluster of the same, but just pinned on with s short steel pin, and with the netting and flowers still just lain down. There's fine cat hair over the whole thing, but the purple, black, gold, white gold and silver embroidery looks rather nice against the matte cool gray.

A few years ago, I made this hat which is still one of my favourite makes. The pattern is self drafted and very simple, basically it's just two circles and a long rectangle.

I used three layers: smooth viscose/cotton lace on top of a cotton fabric which I stabilized with iron-on fusible interfacing. The hat is also lined with a light cotton fabric, so it’s hand washable.

All the materials (except interfacing) are recycled from thrifted clothes, like a skirt lining that I had removed and a lace top that was too short.

To style the hat in different ways, I just tie silk chiffon scarves around it and clip or pin fabric flowers, barrettes or brooches to it.

Oh boy, they did it again. In The X-Files, season two, episode six, “Ascension”, in which Duane Barry kidnaps Scully and takes her up a mountain, the highway patrol cop is wearing a snappy black fedora with grosgrain ribbon and bow - without insignia - just like the green one on the forest ranger in “Darkness Falls”. Did they have something against uniform hats? No campaign hats in the costume inventory in Vancouver?
