This tenement on High Street in Glasgow is built on the site of the now long-gone Burrell's Hall. Daniel Burrell was a Glasgow Dance master who set up a large hall here in the 1730s as a home for his dance school and as a place to hold grand balls for Glasgow's rapidly expanding upper classes. In the 1750s, it was used for a theatrical production, something which led to the hall's destruction.

I love coming across a threshold mosaic in an old Glasgow building. This one is particularly pretty. It's at the entrance to a ground floor shop in the Bell o' the Brae tenements on the corner of Duke Street and High Street.
Love the gable and tempietto on the top of the former British Linen Bank at 215 High Street in central Glasgow. Designed by William Forrest Salmon, it was built 1895. It's not clear if the figure on the top of the gable is purely decorative, or is allegorical in nature.
While he has largely fallen out of favour in the years since his death in 1844, he was well enough regarded in his day to be buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey alongside the likes of Chaucer, Dickens, Browning, Kipling and Tennyson.
A plaque marking the birthplace of the Romantic poet Thomas Campbell at 215 High Street in Glasgow, and his statue in nearby George Square. Born in 1777, Campbell was not only a highly respected poet by the likes of Byron, he also served as the Rector of Glasgow University and helped found University College London.

I love this decoration above the entrance to the former British Linen Bank building at 215 High Street in Glasgow, especially the stained glass boat in the central oeil-de-bouef window and the cheeky little putto clinging to the keystone!
The firm they all worked for, started by James Salmon Senior in the 1830s, eventually morphed into Gillespie, Kidd and Coia, the legendary mid-20th Century Modernist architectural practice run by Jack Coia. This was wound up in 1987, ending a history of more than 150 years of helping to give Glasgow the look it has today.

A Classical style tenement designed by Alexander B. McDonald for the City Improvement Trust and built on High Street in 1891. This is a beautiful blonde sandstone building, but it's easily overlooked due to the incongruous frontage of the ground floor commercial premises and the street furniture positioned in front of it.

The retained facade of the former High Street Goods Depot on Duke Street in Glasgow. Built by North British Railway in the early 1900s, it replaced the earlier College Station Goods Yard constructed in the 1870s a short distance further south on the original site of Glasgow University. The depot closed in the 1980s and much of it was subsequently demolished.
I love this sculptural detail on the Burnet, Boston and Carruthers 1903 tenements on High Street in Glasgow, which were built for the City Improvement Trust. I especially like the phoenix heads at either end, perhaps a symbol of a city being reborn?
