About that BusBoard Prototype Systems SB4 board -- they're expensive. They're more than $6 each (Canadian) plus shipping from DigiKey. They're $10 each plus shipping from Mouser.

That's a lot for a hobbyist when you're experimenting, especially if you're making mistakes.

I looked around again recently, and couldn't find anything I liked at a reasonable price point.

So what does one do in this situation? Well, if you go Overkill 9000, you design your own prototyping perfboard and have a bunch manufactured for you! When you design your own, you can give it any features you like. So this one has:

18 x 36 (648 holes total)

It's two 18 x 18 sections, though I didn't have them scored for snapping.

A total of 6 horizontal busses in groups of 2, at the top and bottom plus one in the middle.

3 sets of 2 vertical busses within that space between horizontal bus sets, similarly edge - center - edge.

Then each row has a 6-hole pad on each side of the center 2 busses, which are spaced for IC or other standard 0.4" component layout.

Made of proper FR4 fiberglass. Good copper, good soldermask.

Silkscreened row and column IDs on both the front and back, at both the start and end of each row/column (and they match up with the back...).

And silkscreened boxes on the front showing the pad/buss pattern - no more flipping!

They arrived today and ... they're beautiful.

#Kapitalismi'a en varmaan koskaan opi ymmärtämään. #VR nosti lähijunien hintoja (2,70 > 3,10 €) mutta piti #IC-junien hinnoittelun entisellään, joten nyt istumapaikkavarauksen saa kaukojunasta halvemmalla kuin istumapaikkavarauksettoman lipun lähijunasta! Onko tarkoitus saada lähimatkustajat taas kansoittamaan muutenkin täysinä kulkevia Porin-junia?!

@hans Voor de reis die ik naar mijn opdracht maak gaat er nu elke tien minuten een #IC. Voorheen reed één van deze niet. Dit betekent dat ik in de praktijk dus eigenlijk niet meer erg precies hoef te plannen wanneer ik vertrek.

In Dormagen ist eine Weiche defekt, deswegen fährt unser #RE6 nicht. Jetzt sind wir bis #Wuppertal #Oberbarmen gekommen. Dort fiel dann der nächste Zug aus, jetzt geht es weiter bis #Hagen Hbf. Dort brauchen wir dann einen Zug nach #Dortmund... Bin ja gespannt ob der wenigstens kommt oder wir wieder eine alternative Lösung finden müssen. Das Problem ist wir können von der Fahrkarte her kein #IC oder #ICE nutzen, sondern nur bis zum #RE. #db #deutschebahn

For folks in the IC:

Remember that you took an oath to serve the American people and uphold the Constitution. That is where you loyalty lies, not to any one person. You know the IC runs on institutional knowledge, much of which is never written down. You can walk away. You'll know when the time is right, whatever time that is for you. You have unique skills and experience that make you an invaluable employee or entrepreneur, and you absolutely won't have to violate any of your lifelong obligations. You will be OK.

I know this, because eight years ago I walked away from the DoD/IC world, having flipped from blue to green in 2013, taking a substantial pay cut to land where I wanted to be (my salary is still less than what I was making in 2016). It was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.

If you're closer to retirement, you can follow long-established tradition and RIP. Hold on to that billet. Get those benefits. All that's really required of you is to breath the Government air.

For everyone else, remember that you cannot be legally compelled to cooperate with background investigations. The most they can expect is verification of employment, and that's HR's responsibility, not a supervisor's or co-worker's. If they're really insistent on interviewing you, they can get a subpoena.
