This week we got pictures from laser cutter projects. We occasionally make stencils, enclosures and nice art pieces. It's way faster than 3d printing and works with more sustainable materials.

Since this is being engraved from the back I had mirrored the engraving so it faces the right way when viewed from the front. Top went fine. Very happy. Rotated the mirror to do the bottom and did a vertical mirror of an already horizontal mirrored engraving which turned out to be a mistake since physically rotating the mirror canceled out the horizontal mirroring. Should have just rotated the horizontal mirror image instead of doing the vertical mirroring. 😭 #LaserEngraving #LaserCrafting #MakerSpace

As a holiday gift for my wife, I finally did some slate engraving and produced coasters for each of of our Dalmatians past and present.

I developed a technique for getting good results (outlining the images so the black parts still have a defined edge) and matt clear-coating the slate first (for contrast).

Results are really nice.
300mm/s @ 30% power on my 50W CO2 seems about perfect. Don't forget to invert the image.

Made her cry.

Ok, reaching out as Mastodon feels like the most "crafty" of all my social networks (although the knitting on IG runs a strong secong) - does anyone here in the UK have the ability to laser engrave/burn a design (as an .SVG) onto a baseball bat? I know a few people who dabble but a partially-rounded surface isn't in their skillset quite yet!
