Bibliothèque du Centre Médical Universitaire, Genève.

The first 4 stages of the massive Geneva university hospital project were designed by Addor & Julliard in 1958. Construction lasted between 1973 and 1987, with occupation starting in 1982.

The medical library pictured here was among this first wave of construction. After a long hiatus due to government spending freezes, the project finally ended in 2016.

BU Schuman, Aix-en-Provence, France.

The development of the university campus in Aix was interrupted by WWII. When work resumed in the 1950s, the Spanish Revival style of the earlier buildings made way to a modern campus designed by René Egger.

For the law library completed in 1954, architect Fernand Pouillon sought to blend the two styles.

Cardiff Central Library, Wales.

Designed by BDP Architects and opened in 2009, this is the fourth central library building in Cardiff. It sits on the southern end of The Hayes, the open market plaza in the city centre. On the opposite end is the 19th century Old Library, now a museum.

The artwork in front of it is "Alliance" by Jean-Bernard Métais.

Þjóðarbókhlaðan, Reykjavík.

The National and University Library of Iceland was designed by Manfreð Vilhjálmsson and Þorvaldur S. Þorvaldsson.

Work on the new library started in 1978. But a series of events, starting with the oil crisis of 1973, caused massive delays. The building finally opened in 1994, the year of the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Iceland.

Zweigbibliothek Theologie, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Thanks to a generous atrium that channels light from above, architects Assmann & Salomon were able to create a bright and welcoming library on a small footprint. Among the largest research libraries on theology in Germany, it holds over 350,000 volumes. The current building opened in 2007.

Biblioteca Central UNAM, Mexico City.

The Central Library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) was built by Juan O'Gorman in 1956.

To create the impressive mosaic that covers all faces of the book stack tower, O'Gorman collected 150 varieties of stone in 12 colours from all around Mexico. With an area of 16'000m² it is the largest mosaic in the world.

Westmount Public Library Conservatory.

The English-speaking Montreal enclave of Westmount was among the first municipalities in Canada to establish a public library in 1899.

In 1927, an elegant conservatory, or palmhouse, was built to connect the library with neighbouring Victoria Hall. Open to patrons, it offers a lush reading space in all seasons!
