I have had a rough morning (mostly a procession of slightly annoying things but just one after the other) so to cope I am making another white linen shirt, because why not another white linen shirt. Just a basic one, too!
Have been slowly sewing the two new linen shifts, and boy was it time to... On the left, the nice new shift with its hand finishing in progress. On the right, a poor old one, fresh from the wash so I can repurpose the still good fabric, absolutely falling apart!
A little bit earlier today, this second hand shirt took a couple more steps towards being more patch than shirt... But it's a good shirt! It's amazing how much more worn the right sleeve is, what do I even do to cause it??
#linen : thread or cloth made of flax or (rarely) of hemp

- Italian: lino

The white linen saga, where I bought four one metre pieces of white linen of the same weight, to compare them, and see which one I liked most. Oh and also randomly received five one metre pieces, but anyway. Here they are, currently washed but not ironed, in case I don't get around to it before it gets too dark for good photos. They're so different!
My experiment in ordering four different white linen fabrics from the same shop has yielded these results:
All of them are minutely but noticeably different and I was able to pick out a favourite for different uses despite all of them being some of the most beautiful fabrics I've ever handled. I have ranked them, hopefully without mixing them up!
Sunlight photos of the night dress sewing I did yesterday. Took the top of sleeve, arm's eyes and yoke section off my basic blouse pattern and then just cut a series of rectangles and straight lines. Sleeve slits by hand, some quick pintucks with the twin needle and overlocking with the viscose thread... And now about to relax with minutely hemming the rest of this ruffle by hand.
Notes on prewashing linen and cotton lace: Both will shrink in the first wash, linen more so. If you're putting either on a garment you're going to put in the washing machine, you should wash it before you do. One of those little basket cage bag things for washing brassieres is great, just unspool the whole length of it in there (6m fits fine in a small one) and wash with whatever else. Then gently flatten it out, and iron it hot when it's still wet or damp!
In addition to mostly resting and trying to get my life back together after simply too many small disasters, I've made another shirt out of the birthday gift linen. It doesn't look like much just on the hanger, but I cannot be invested in changing from a clean shirt to another clean shirt at this time. It's pretty nice though!
Back on my bullshit, which is to say that I've just cut out the pieces of yet another black linen shirt. This is still the fabric I got with a gift card from aunt, and I have a feeling I bought much more than I thought... There might very well be a third shirt hiding in there, or at the very least a camisole of sorts?
@sinituulia You are of course right about #cotton and #linen, but I want to make a side note that any crop will only be fertiliser- and pesticide-intensive if you #monoculture it. Which you should never do with any crop, ever.
Yes, I know that monoculture still considered "standard procedure" by many, but it is harmful in pretty much all respects and it needs to stop. #polyculture #sustainability #permaculture
Let me slip into my brand for a little bit before bed:
You know how cotton is incredibly water, pesticide and fertiliser intensive to grow? Well CHECK THIS OUT, I have an inconveniently powerful sense of smell and thus usually use a cotton towel for maybe three days before it starts to offend me. These nice linen towels that I have?? Going on strong for over a week! Fucking magical! Can you imagine the water and detergent saved?? Less washing, so much less water to grow??
Just covering some window mounts in this fabulous gingerbread coloured linen.
Four days of #BlackWalnut foraging from a single 100+ year old tree in my yard. I've been filling a plastic shopping bag every day. I'll keep #foraging as long as this tree keeps providing
I've also got a vat of the hulls on the stove for a dye bath. Going to make a test batch of #HandDyed fiber - but first I gotta brush it off of the #AngoraRabbits !
If I like the color it gives me, I'll do another batch with the #linen I grew this year.
