From the archives: An illustration I made inspired by love letters from an Anthology. This one depicts Ninon de l'Enclos who had written the Marquis de Sévigné a letter, where she breaks off they romance.
I have the idea to restart making drawings based on those love letters. Keep you posted.

Over time the idea of kesōbumi 'love letters' evolved into a charm that would work in a more general way to make the possessor 'attractive' (whether in love or business).
It is said the first 'love letter vendors' (懸想文売) appeared in the Edo period in Kyōto.

In the Meiji period 'love letter' charms fell out of fashion, but after being moved in 1924, Suga-jinja saw a way to revive the custom and revive its own fortunes (Kōtsū-jinja merged with the shrine in 1964).
Maintaining tradition, the identity of vendors is kept secret

As their name suggests, kesōbumi (懸想文) also help in finding (or realizing) love. Businesses often purchase the charms to 'attract' customers and guests.
Kesōbumi (懸想文 'love letters') are special 'attraction' amulets that were particularly popular with young women in the Edo period.
By placing the amulet in your clothes draw it is said that you will always have something good to wear, and will always look good in what you wear.
"Elegant Lady Writing at Her Desk," Gabriël Metsu, 1662-64.
Metsu (1629-1667) was a noted Dutch painter of history scenes and genre scenes, most bits of everyday life. Most of his female subjects had faces based on his wife's...this one, however, does not.
The subject (who is unknown) is meant to be a woman of wealth, judging by the fur trim of her outfit. She looks smiling up at us but she could be happy in writing to a loved one. The bed in the background, and the dog (frequently a symbol of fidelity) hint that it's a love letter.

A soft warm rendition of a Halloween scene I made once. A love letter on a trellis in silhouette. Can you see the jack-o-lantern?
On behalf of romantic sluts everywhere, I'm advocating for the return of love letters. Heady, lustful, romantic, FILTHY love letters.
And here's how to write a *perfect* one:
I’ve been on a school camp for a week. Introduced a group of middle aged men to playing #Loveletter #cardgame
They were very sceptical to begin with (weird game with strange rules). They are all addicted to it a few nights later.
I think I’ve sold at least 4 copies of it when they get home.
