If anyone would like to help me test my portable email server, please send something to greetings@zia.io
#NetBSD #mailserver
I just installed a new battery on my test email server. Unlike the battery that’s close to absolute zero, the battery for my email server progressively lost capacity until it got to the point where it wouldn’t charge.
Can someone recommend me a mail provider with the following features:
- I can keep the domain(s) with my current registrar
- Some means keep the cursed historically grown sub-addressing using + and - working (user1@, user1+tag@, user1-tag2@ all to the same mailbox - there is no list of all used tags). Simple catch-all wouldn't work since there is more than one user.
- ideal the possibility to reject mails for a given "complete" local part (e.g. when that website where it had been entered has been hacked and only spam uses that address including the tag nowadays)
- EU/DE (company and server location)
Currently I postpone too much renovating my mailserver, so I was thinking if I can delegate that completely.

@stalwartlabs first of all - I really like Stalwart - it's really well done and I haven't had any problems so far - thanks for that!
I was just wondering, is there a way to greylist mails above a certain spam score instead of all?

Weekend over, 2 mailservers migrated from dovecot to Stalwart…
@stalwartlabs please don't break stuff
#SelfHosting #mailserver
The alternatives courier and cyrus both require me to start from scratch - with no guarantee that this might not happen again - quiet a bad feeling there…

That whole #dovecot breaking update (and from what I've seen the unreasonable pro version, at least for small setups) makes me question self-hosting my mail server…
I'm fine with investing time to setup something the first time - but updates (especially not minor) should never be breaking… - neither should they require quiet some time investment imho…

Since Dovecot 2.4 is dropping replication, I'll definitely need to rework my mail servers and those for BSDMail. I think I'll be going back to Cyrus, which I last used over 20 years ago. The problem is my memories have long faded, so it'll be like studying it again from scratch. And that makes me happy, because it'll be like learning something totally new!
Special thanks to @h3artbl33d for the heads up!

This weekend's project:
Replaced my #Postfix #MTA #mailserver with a new one. I had been running a #Ubuntu based one since 2020, and it didn't deal well with an in-place upgrade.
New machine set up on #Debian 12, with a bunch of tips stolen from @mwl 's book Run Your Own Mail Server and from https://workaround.org/ispmail-bookworm/
@root42 yup. It took a bit of time beacuse I went the hard way installing and hardening everything manually but my test e-mail server has been succesfully running for more than a month. So far, the most annoying thing has been Microsoft/Outlook.com always sending my mails to junk first (no matter how many times previous recipients have marked my domain as "legit"). #selfhosting #mailserver
If anyone out there runs a #Plesk server, check to see if your have a ton of emails stuck in your mail queue. There was a problematic email security update that got applied within the past 12 hours that caused mail queues to stop processing both incoming and outgoing email.
Fortunately, it's an easy fix.
So, last night I finally took the last step and switchted my DNS entries to my own self hosted mail server (@mwl your book was really helpful - great work!)
But now I am back to my previous problem - which mail client to use on iOS and macOS - any suggestions fediverse? (boosts are quiet welcome)

Was ich sagen will: Man fühlt sich gut aufgehoben.
