The effects of meltwater and heavy overnight rain on a river that hit its record twelve foot flood last week.

This is the Mersey between Flixton and Carrington just at the confluence with the Manchester Ship Canal at Irlam Docks. Ordinarily you'd see the weir where a modest sized river drops into the canal. It's just visible as a line of white turbulence in the river.

A big, brown, river nearly reaches the top of the tree-lined banks either side. The photo is taken from a train on the railway embankment on the North side about thirty feet above the bank. On the South side is a factory and a corner of its yard. The river curves a little then joins seamlessly with a straighter channel of water we can just see heading towards the horizon from the right-hand margin of the photo.
