I replaced my damaged 48-year-old Sharp #microwave oven with a #Panasonic. The old oven used a 15 W incandescent bulb mounted on the top of the stainless steel cavity to provide bright interior light. The new one has a dark coating with a tiny white LED at the front-right side making it almost impossible to see what’s inside.

The controls have white text on a light gray background. My wife struggles to read it with her ageing eyes. I created an overlay of bold black print on a white background.

My microwave is now fifteen years old. It’s the first thing I use in the morning to defrost my bread, and the last thing I use in the evening to warm up my herbal tea.
For fifteen years, faithful, never letting me down. I’ve cooked and reheated everything in it, tried all sorts of experiments. But it’s there every day, ready to help.

When it finally breaks, it will feel like losing an old friend. For now, it keeps serving me with efficiency and loyalty.
Tonight, I’m feeling sentimental.

Eating some instant grits + nooch and realizing we don't appreciate microwaves enough. Warm food? That is cooked by a robot? Instantly? This is such a futuristic luxury. It's like something from a science fiction story. It inspires an animistic impulse in me... thanks for making my dinner, little robot buddy...

A few thoughts...

What does this microwave oven button lineup say about the typical North American diet?

What is the engineering or programming process to differentiate between a baked potato or a beverage?

Is there any differentiation at all, or does pressing any of the buttons result in the same thing: 90 seconds of radiation beamed at the contents of the oven?

Just curious...

Update: The microwave came back to life for breakfast and lunch! Then it died at dinner, and smelled like it had blown a circuit.

Then, I checked the Costco website for new microwaves, and discovered Costco adds an additional year of warranty for appliances, including microwaves!

Hauled the microwave to Costco and got a full refund (with documentation in hand), and bought a new microwave!

Good morning. ⏰🥱☕

I woke up early this morning and it wasn't because of Charlie. I just woke up an hour earlier than usual. Now I'm tired and sipping luke warm coffee. I Suppose that I could get up and top off my cup. Something else that I do, that I think other people do now-a-days, is I reheat my coffee in the microwave when it cools down. Hmmm ... I remember life without the kitchen microwave. I wonder how we survived without it. I was talking with somebody yesterday who said she popped corn from kernels on the stove. Oh, how mid 20th century. 😉 Yes, I'm aware that stores sell stovetop popcorn. I remember the ruggedness of having to boil water on the stove for my cup of ramen.
