#The89Percent Project is a global #media collaboration aimed at highlighting the fact that the vast majority of people in the world care about climate change and want their governments to do something about it. Coverage started on #EarthDay and will lead to the #COP30 UN climate summit in Brazil.

#Media, #newsrooms, and #journalists can join with their stories! 89percent.org/

The 89 Percent ProjectThe 89 Percent ProjectBetween 80 and 89% of the world’s people want their governments to be doing more to address climate change. Let’s tell their stories.

Today I actually made a few sessions at the 4th FediForum.

Two were about journalism.

The First was how newsrooms use or rather don’t quite use the Fediverse. Not yet at least. And how it’s all about metrics and tracking to make sure the effort is worth the squeeze. It was organized by Ben Werdmuller from ProPublica.

The second was about how we can get more journalists and newsrooms to use the Fediverse instead of Twitter. This was organized by by Dan Gillmor.

Both were very good discussions and about a topic/industry that I’m very passionate about.

The other one, that I made, was about how to make finding people and accounts easier on a decentralized web. Above my pay grade a bit, but very interesting. It was with Andy Piper and his colleague from Mastodon Development.

And the last one was about how to monetize our feeds. Check out Sub.Club! It’s pretty slick!

Tomorrow is the last day. Can’t wait!

No #NewstodonFriday from us this week because, frankly, we're going on vacation soon and have stacks of other stuff to do. In its stead, we're recommending this @FediFollows' thread below, which will help you find fantastic news organizations to follow. Share a newsroom's fedi handle in the comments, or a favorite story you've discovered here, and we'll boost it.

#Newsrooms are so unprepared for #AI
You'd think they'd obtain permission from a source for photo?

Major Australian news outlets appear to have unknowingly published AI-manipulated images of Barnaby Joyce, raising questions about how prepared newsrooms are for the technology widespread’s use.

“I presume the original, un-AI’d version depicts Barnaby soberly standing up and sipping a glass of sparkling mineral water, does it?"

Earlier this week, I discussed how establishing a commons of tightly-focused local newsrooms would strengthen democracy and provide much-needed support for underserved communities. Enter Press Forward, which is providing half a billion dollars to do just that. werd.io/2023/press-forward-bri

Since the dawn of Netscape, I’ve spent most of my working career in, or adjacent to, #newsrooms — that’s kept my socials fairly polished and safe, because #journalism

So, I’m really going to attempt something different here and be a little messier — the hope being I spend more time forming my ideas in the open here (not too dissimilar to what @clive called #thoughcasting) and less time sharing digestible concepts

We’ll see how it goes (but I already can tell it means it will be wordy…)
