christophwarner<p>Yesterday while on the upper east side, right behind the MET in Central Park. I watched a NYPD cruiser berate a small group of musicians playing jazz because they had a small speaker. What really irked me about it was that the officers didn’t get out of their cruiser and have a conversation. The officer driving used his PA speaker from the cruiser, the irony! Then to further the spectacle of how we’ve lost the plot here, he’s driving on a path littered with NYC pedestrians of all walks of life on a spring NYC day in a goddamn cruiser. Policing in this country needs a serious overhaul with federal guidelines. I no longer believe it’s salvageable in any capacity. </p><p>edit: this is still so visceral an image to me of how disconnected that organization is. As a black man in America there are many reasons for me to tell my son to stay away from police. Yesterday he got to see a simple interaction and he’s not even a decade old. A young child thinks they could have handled the situation better.
