In “Back to the Future,” there is a scene where Doc Brown is surprised by the advanced technology from Japan, highlighting rapid technological advancements, reflecting the real-world perception of the electronics industry in the 1980s.

Everybody memoryholed how that wasn’t an overriding concern after the Cold War ended.

Why do we think that was?

Sellaisella mukavalla asialla lähdin soittelemaan, että artikkelini "The Affectivity of 'Pants Science': Speculative Clothing, Disco Elysium, and Pattern Recognition" on vapaasti saatavilla vähän rumana ei-ladottuna versiona, mutta kuitenkin! Jos siis Harry du Bois, William Gibson, FALN-modulaarit *SIKA* ja muutenkin aatteelliset vaatteet kiinnostavat niin pyydä rarea zip-tiedostoa minulta tai surffaa researchportal.tuni.fi/en/pers #DiscoElysium #PatternRecognition #Kirjallisuudentutkimus #Pelitutkimus #Affektitutkimus #SpekulatiivisetVaatteetOnMunAatteet

#ArtificialIntelligence: #feilnerism

We are using a term that we cannot define ("intelligence") for marketing by adding an adjective to make it sound more sophisticated and technical with the only intention of selling, making money out of it. Today, everything that is "magic" (see Clarke) has become "#AI": #LLM, #PatternRecognition, #MachineLearning, #Cloud, #SpeechRecognition, #Assistants, ... all the stuff from the last decades. What is really new about it?

Okay, I’m just going to put this out there and see what response (if any) it attracts. I was driving to work about 6 months ago, I was trying to find an empty car spot in the hospital’s multi-storey car park. I realised that my eyes don’t scan for empty car spots, but rather I scan the lines of car shadows on either side, to determine if there are any missing car shadows. I realised this is pretty fool proof, is very effective, efficient and fast. I’ve always been big into pattern recognition, but hadn’t realised that I used it in this type of way as well. Who else realises that they do this? #patternRecognition #parking #driving #quirks

So, one of my autistic super-powers is pattern recognition, as well as the ability to remember things I read -- whether in a book or online (not word-for-word, but the gist).

Pattern recognition helps me recognize patterns of abuse by governments and corporations -- to indigenous peoples and people of color, to wildlife, to natural resources, etc. Unfortunately, this "pattern" has been going on since Ancient Greece, when #colonizers like #Odysseus, eyed lands occupied by those he viewed as inferior -- like women, or those who were different -- as being prime real estate, and ripe for seizing!

Always remember the words of George Santanaya: "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it." (from "The Life of Reason and Human Progress," 1905).

“I have a hard time with sequences, patterns and spatial reasoning.

At school, my processing issues often left me deeply embarrassed.

During math lessons, I’d feel a kind of desperation as I tried to understand what was being taught before I got called on.

There was never enough time.”

Here's a weird question. Will AI ever create #Art using language?

I see all kinds of articles about how #ChatGPT is giving English teachers hell and screwing reporters even more. I can see how people could at least project inspiration on AI art because #PatternRecognition is subjective. But could AI write a novel that people find meaningful? Or will extinction of #LiberalArts education make those questions irrelevant anyway? It's hard enough to get someone to read a book as it is.

The thing about this jacket: I am attracted to it the way William Gibson is attracted to old bomber jackets. But it leads me to questions. Who designed or chose the jacket? I didn't see any wardrobe people in the credits. Was there a style consultant? Also, I am enamored of a fake jacket in an anime-stylized take on a cyberpunk world conceived in 1968, but fully visualized in 1982, and envisioned again in 2017. So, did they hire Renee April to consult on anime fashion? #how #PatternRecognition
