Today in Labor History April 19, 1903: The Kishinev pogrom occurred in Bessarabia. At the time, Bessarabia was part of the Russian Empire. Today it is part of Moldova. During the pogrom, local Christians killed 49 Jews, raped many Jewish women and destroyed over 1500 homes. The incident led Zionist founder, Theodor Herzl, to propose the Uganda Scheme for resettlement of the Jews in east Africa. The British government supported the plan, as it would help further their interests and imperialism in Africa, and help limit the influx of Jewish refugees into Britain from eastern Europe. Herzl had also proposed creating a Jewish homeland in Cyprus. Of course, what he really desired was a Jewish homeland in Palestine, but the Kishinev pogrom caused him to feel a greater urgency to create any kind of homeland as quickly as possible, and east Africa was what was being offered. The proposal nearly fractured the Zionist movement, with many delegates walking out, and other expressing a loss of faith in Herzl’s leadership. White British gentile settlers in east Africa also opposed the plan.

[followup] #Palestine / Israeli forces revenge raid Jinba village in Masafer Yatta terrorizing residents and causing widespread damage

According to #Haaretz, approximately 140 Israeli soldiers and civilians (some are settlers from the nearby settlements) conducted a pre-dawn raid on Jinba village in Masafer Yatta (featured in the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land"). Residents report that between 2:00-6:30 AM Saturday, forces entered all homes, damaged appliances, destroyed food supplies, and intimidated residents during Ramadan.

Village committee head Nidal Younis stated soldiers forced families including women and children into corners while destroying property. He quoted one soldier saying: "Yesterday you thought you were strong, now we'll show you that we are stronger."

This raid followed a previous day's incident where settlers allegedly attacked six Palestinians in the village, after which 22 residents were detained.

Attorney Netta Amar, representing villagers, has demanded an investigation, calling the incident a "pogrom and hate crime" that indicates "the disintegration of any ethical code and rule of law."

The occupation force spokesperson confirmed conducting an operation to search for weapons but provided no details about findings.

[…] In a letter sent this morning by attorney Netta Amar, who represents the residents, to the army and police, she wrote that "The military militia broke all the houses, cameras, school, clinic, and mosque, and killed and drove away the sheep." She added that "This is a widespread pogrom and hate crime, following the hate crimes and pogrom conducted yesterday, which demonstrates the breakdown of any ethical code and rule of law by the army and settler militias that have taken control of it."

Today in Labor History March 25, 1919: Cossack troops murdered 4,000 Jews in the Tetiev pogrom in Ukraine, two-thirds of the Jewish population. They tossed infants into the air and dashed their bodies on the pavement and burned the Jewish quarter to the ground. The Tetiev pogrom would become the prototype of mass murder during the Holocaust. During the Russian Civil War, from 1918 to 1921, there were 1,236 violent attacks against Jews in 524 Ukrainian towns. 30,000-60,000 died in these pogroms. The Ukrainian People's Republic army, Ukrainian warlords, the Red Army and the Polish Army all participated in anti-Jewish pogroms.

Imagine for a moment that you were the Dem governor of the most populous state in a country that just elected an openly fascist government that is actively using a moral panic to criminalizing the existence of a highly vulnerable minority group while conducting a much broader pogrom against that vulnerable and targeted minority group; in this case trans people. What is the most pathetic, craven, cowardly, selfish, irresponsible, and openly collaborationist (with fascists) thing you could possibly do? I guarantee that no matter what your brain just came up with, it's not worse than what California Governor and potential 2028 Dem presidential nominee Gavin Newsom just did:

erininthemorning.com/p/ca-gov-

"On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom launched his new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom. His first guest? Notorious anti-LGBTQ+ extremist Charlie Kirk. The episode covered a wide range of grievances Kirk and other far-right activists have with Newsom, touching on topics from Black Lives Matter to COVID policies. However, the issue of transgender rights surfaced repeatedly. At one point, Newsom stated he was "completely aligned" with Kirk on transgender participation in sports. He also appeared to express agreement with restrictions on medical care for incarcerated transgender people and limits on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth."

Yes, you read that correctly; the Dem Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, celebrated the birth of his new podcast by inviting Charlie fucking Kirk on to his show and stridently agreeing with him about various aspects of the GOP's fascist war on trans rights and by extension, their efforts to threaten the existence of trans people entirely. I'm sure some Dem apologists reading this are already calling me an alarmist, but before I explain why you can't have just "a little" fascist persecution of trans people, I'd like to make something abundantly clear. Charlie Kirk is a professional fascist propagandist, who is actively employed in the task of creating ideological arguments to support, and popular support for, a real as fuck pogrom against trans people. That's what he is, that's what he does for a living:

"Newsom’s invitation and capitulation to Charlie Kirk on his podcast will alarm LGBTQ+ advocates. Kirk has a well-documented history of extremist rhetoric and hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community. In a 2023 video, he stated, “These people are sick… I blame the decline of American men. Someone should have just ‘took care of it’ the way we used to take care of things in the 1950s and 60s, but as you have testosterone rates going down and men acting like women, well…”—seemingly advocating for violence against transgender people. Kirk has also repeatedly used the slur "tr*nny" and has encouraged its normalization. He once called transgender people “a throbbing middle finger to god.” In the last election cycle, TPUSA’s PAC, which he leads, spent millions on anti-transgender ads, making his presence on Newsom’s platform all the more striking."

Given that, hosting Charlie Kirk on your podcast in the first place is a profoundly craven and dangerous act of fascist collaboration. Enough so that even if Newsom and Kirk were chatting about the weather, he should still be forced to resign immediately from both the party and the governorship. Of course, they weren't just talking about the weather; Governor Newsom, who btw has one of the safest seats in all of US government and thus has no electoral need to pander to, again, fascists who want to criminalize and ultimately end the existence of trans people, invited Charlie on his podcast to spew transphobic propaganda in service of an active fascist pogrom targeting trans people and in particular young trans women; and then agreed with him. There is no wiggle room or nuance to be had here, Newsom just helped the fascists make trans people less safe in America and his actions absolutely *will* have a body count associated with them down the line. This isn't about women's sports, or gender care in carceral settings because those are just the wedge arguments the fascists are using to criminalize trans existence; what Newsom is doing here is agreeing in principle that trans people are a danger to women/girls, and that their medical rights should be subject to legislation - all that's left to argue about at that point is to what degree trans people aren't people and thus don't have the same rights as other Americans.

Folks, this isn't some backwater school board rep straying off script; Newsom is probably one of the five most powerful people in the entire Democratic Party and clearly has designs on the presidential nomination for the 2028 US election. If liberals want to prove folks like me are wrong when we say Dems would trade trans lives for ten suburban white votes in an election they'll lose anyway, you need to DO something about Gavin Newsom; immediately.

Questi attacchi stanno funzionando.

Today in Labor History January 16, 1919: Semana Tragica (Tragic week) ended on this date in Buenos Aires. The authorities slaughtered as many as 700 workers and wounded 2,000. The government repression that followed decimated the militant Argentinean anarchist labor movement. From 1902 until 1909, the Federacion Obrera Regional Argentina had waged a series of General Strikes against the bosses and anti-labor legislation. The Semana Tragica began as a strike at the Vasena metal works. On January 3, striking workers fired on the police, wounding three. On January 7, the maritime workers voted for a General Strike for better wages and hours. On that same date, militant workers shot and killed an army lieutenant at the Vasena metal works. The police responded by killing five workers. That night, militant workers killed two more soldiers. On January 8, the waterfront strike began, halting all loading and unloading of cargo. On January 8, hundreds marched in a funeral procession for the workers who had been killed by the cops. Along the way, they attacked property and burned cars. The police fired into the procession, killing several people. Mobs then rampaged throughout Buenos Aires, burning streetcars and buildings, looting sporting goods stores for guns and ammunition. 3,000 stormed the Lacrose Station. The Argentine Chamber of Deputies fought with each other, but took no action on the violence in the streets. The violence and killings continued for days, with right-wing vigilantes joining the police and soldiers, assaulting workers and committing pogroms against the city’s Jews.

#ICE #pogrom #deportation #Trump

More bad news from Flori-Duh: we have the Lake County Commission begging ICE to begin mass deportations in Central Florida.

One ICE van reported spotted on I-4 near Plant City but this could have been total chance, some motor pool vehicle going to Staples or Office Depot for some toner cartridges and paper.

I hope to hell this is nothing, but Central Florida activists need to be ON ALERT, and keep an eye on this

'A'dam: chauffeurs haalden demonstr. op'

In defiance of a protest ban, on November 10, hundreds of people gathered in Dam Square, including myself, in solidarity with the people of Palestine.
[...]
Some 340 people, including myself, were detained on buses and driven through the city, accompanied by several police vans and motorcycles.
[...]
As we made our way back to the city centre, cars began circling around us and the drivers beckoned for us to get in. They introduced themselves as the Moroccan drivers whose colleague had been attacked by Maccabi fans on November 6. In a heartwarming act of solidarity after hours of police repression, they drove us back to Amsterdam, making sure that we got home safely.

Eveneens uit dat opiniestuk:

As historian Ilan Pappe predicted in a recent article (newleftreview.org/sidecar/post), “once Israel realises the magnitude of the crisis, it will unleash ferocious and uninhibited force to try to contain it”. The desperate attempt to distort the reality of events in Amsterdam is indicative of this panic, and the willingness of Western leaders and mainstream media to go along with this insanity is unforgivable.
