Moe LassusYesterday I discovered a chipmunk that had tangled itself terribly in the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/pond" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#pond</a> net. I put on my <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wildlife</a> gloves and proceeded to untangle the little bugger. It remained very calm the whole time I worked. As I held him up to show my wife, it chomped down, hard, on my thumb. 😖Thankfully the gloves prevented any damage but I was startled at how strong of a bite they have. Anyway, the ungrateful little bastard is free! 🙄 😆

NessI just spent the past 3.5 hours walking around in the woods at night with a few students for an amphibian night lab. Full moon, wood frogs and barred owls calling through the night, spotted salamanders swimming around. 🏳️‍⚧️ Portabello Belle 🏳️‍⚧️Today has been very productive. After draining the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/pond" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#pond</a>, and clearing some space around it, I dug out and remade it. It is now more than twice the original size, and deeper. I have not been able to completely fill it, as I'm using <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/rainwater" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#rainwater</a> collected in water butts, and I've emptied them, but rain is due in the next day or two. A d d i e B e a lA couple people I know call these “cat nine tails” or “cat o’ nine tails” which, it turns out, is the name of a type of whip historically used for corporal punishment.
