What's on ProRep Coalition's Docket May 19, 2025Dear friends, As the movement for proportional representation grows across California, our team has been so inspired by just how many new volunteer and supporters have signed up to join the campaign for multiparty democracy in our state. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen an incredible wave of momentum. From vibrant community talks in Sacramento and panel presentations in Phoenix, to exciting chapter meetings in the East Bay and Los Angeles; ProRep Coalition has been working hard to bring people together to realize a more representative democracy in California. Whether it was your first time joining us or you’ve been with us since the beginning, your energy and commitment are what keep this movement moving forward. Looking ahead, we’re excited to keep the momentum going. We’ve got a powerful lineup of events this month—including two local chapter meetings in LA and Sacramento, a conversation with Professor Lorelei Moosbrugger in Santa Barbara, and community canvassing with ProRep's East Bay chapter on No Kings Day in Oakland. These gatherings are more than just events—they’re opportunities to connect, strategize, and build the grassroots power we need to win real change in California. Please see a handful of highlights from some of our recent events below, as well as invitations to some of the upcoming events we have planned this next month. We hope to see you there, and thank you for your continued support!

I can't see why this couldn't work for normal MMP or AV+ though I'd prefer open list for the region vote if we were to go MMP via dual mandate.

Though I'm likely over looking something mathmatical. Especially if multi member is part if it due to ridings getting as big as 7-9 as an example.

My motivation for this is mostly RUP related as I would want to expand the choice of single member districts to what would be in multi-member. Since it's cleaner for RUP to have follow best runner up for regional appointment, it can be seen as a pseudo-open list. AV+/STV+ model in mind.

Hey fellow proportional representation supporters. I have a hypothetical: how do we feel about MMP or other regional top up systems like RUP with best runner up appointment but parties are allowed to run N + 1 candidates in a riding/district?

@pinhman @Crispius My riding is a stronghold for the NDP and I would really hope the Liberals would not waste a good candidate by running one against her. I think the NDP and Liberals should work together and not split votes needed to defeat the Cons. Minority governments work well together. The last sitting of parliament has proven this to be true. I would really prefer #prorep but….. you know.

So much to say about this.
First of all: This was predicted by everyone who understood electoral systems.
It's bound to consistently happen in our system where one side of the political spectrum is fragmented.
