Thinking about switching to a #Proton family plan to consolidate a few apps: domain email, VPN, non-iCloud storage, functional calendars for my wife (she constantly runs into the Gmail invite problem), possibly even their password manager.

Anyone have experiences, thoughts, etc.? How’s the customer support? How is their spam protection (this is a big one for me)?

I'm frustrated by ProtonMail's keyboard shortcuts, because they miss the point.

I suspect Proton added keyboard shortcuts for feature parity with the competition. They have shortcuts for most common commands, yet they fail to improve the app's accessibility. Why?

In GMail, the mouse is optional. They modeled the full state graph of the app, and they created keyboard shortcuts for most / all of the actions and transitions you can do in every state. That means you can navigate from any state to any other, and get everything done from the keyboard.

Proton screws this up, especially keyboard focus and chaining commands. For instance, if I type "gi" to go to the inbox, I then have to click to focus the message list before I can use keyboard navigation to select one of the messages there. At best I can do an action or two at a time before I break out the mouse. But the only reason I use keyboard shortcuts is to save my wrists from mousing!

#EA has confirmed that #Battlefield 6 will be completely unplayable on #Linux systems, including #SteamDeck, due to its new kernel-level anti-cheat system, “EA Javelin,” which explicitly blocks Linux. This move is a slap in the face to the growing #Linuxgaming community, especially considering how far compatibility has come with #Proton and #SteamOS.

Worse yet, EA is using open-source tech like the #GodotEngine in parts of the game, while denying access to the very platforms that champion #opensource. It’s hypocritical and #anticonsumer.

There’s no option to disable #anticheat for #singleplayer or #privateservers, meaning users who value #privacy or #freedom of platform are locked out entirely.

It's a hostile decision rooted in control, not security.

I used to pay £23 for #Google and #Microsoft accounts per month, just to have cloud storage and #Office.

I've since moved to #Proton for storage, VPN and email (about £10). The money saved has gone towards monthly donations to #LibreOffice (365 replacement) and #Signal (#Meta #WhatsApp replacement) - both #FOSS.

What I'm trying to say, I guess, is that if you #LeaveBigTech - and can afford it - donations to the organisations that try to keep the internet free and private would be excellent.

I suppose I overreacted and let my opinion and actions be influenced by people who either are incapable of exercising nuance or basic understanding, or who willfully disregarded all such seemingly in pursuit of an agenda of ideological purity, à la Stalin and Mao, et. al.

Perhaps.
