The Beach Comber. Another one of my favorite spots in Socal. This place is in Crystal Cove and as you can see, its literally on the beach - which you surprisingly don't find a lot of in Southern California. They serve really good seafood (fresh and generous portions) and cocktails for fairly reasonable prices considering the location. The only thing about this place is that it's super popular and will not seat you unless your whole party is present. It's also one of those places where you definitely need to make reservations ahead because the chances of being able to walk in are basically non-existent. Can't wait for the summer weather to roll in so I can enjoy this place again!

The comment about there being no smell of cooking reminds me of the Fawlty Towers episode ‘Gourmet Night’ (no riffraff) where the new chef is drunk and incapable. Basil has to rush out to a friend’s restaurant for duck and all sorts of mishaps occur (includes famous car beating scene). #GraceDent #RestaurantReview

🆕 blog! “Restaurant Review: 123V Vegan Sushi”
★★★★★

Have you ever grabbed a little pack of sushi as part of a supermarket meal deal? Some dry and flavourless rice, wrapped in something slimy, tasting overwhelmingly of sadness? 123V is the literal opposite of that. Flavours so enticing that the soy sauce and wasabi almost felt redundant. A panoply of delight…

🆕 blog! “Restaurant Review: No Catch - Vegan Fish and Chips”
★★★★⯪

There's nothing finer to do in Brighton than walk along the promenade eating a wodge of chips the size of your face. But it was raining, so we sat inside and ate all the chips instead. This is Brighton's 100% vegan chippie. As well as big fluffy chips, battered (veggie) sausage, and al…

🆕 blog! “Restaurant Review: Chef's Table at The Savoy”

My mate Greg, without meaning to, makes all other husbands look bad. It's not enough that he is a loving partner, devoted father, and pillar of the community. Oh no. He also has to go and make the most amazing reservations for wedding anniversaries. My wife, Liz, and I were running slightly late for our […]

My latest restaurant review is up! This time I’m back in dtk, at Pho Vietnam K&W to graze on some delicious Vietnamese dishes.
There's a lot to choose from here and it's all delicious and aromatic, and we sampled A LOT.

You can read about the restaurant and the dishes in today's Record, and online:

It was easier to get my next review out this week rather than next – and what a place it is. This time, I’m at dtk’s new takeaway sushi market The Humble Lotus.

Lots of good things to say here. The draw is creative fresh-made sushi by the piece (you can get it by the roll), but also SE Asian grab-and-go bowls. Jared Wood and My Nguyen are doing awesome things here.

I don't think I've ever spent £400 on a meal for two before...! Let's get that out of the way first. We decided to go out to celebrate our wedding anniversary, the completion of my MSc, Liz being appointed to a committee, and... you know what? Fuck you! It has been a bastard of a […]

🆕 blog! “Restaurant Review: 3D Printed Redefine Meat @ Unity Diner”
★★★★★

"How long have you been vegetarian?" Asked the waitress. "Oh, over twenty years now," I replied. She looked concerned. "Some people find the 3D printed steak a bit..." she paused, considered, and continued, "A bit intense. It takes people by surprise how it makes them fee…

We flew in early to Kuala Lumpur - the only way to stave off the jetlag was to go hunting for lunch. We made the mistake of trying to walk through the city. What looked like a brisk 30 minute stroll became an exercise in dashing across busy roads in the sweltering heat. My brain…

🆕 blog! “Restaurant Review: Rani Vilas Restaurant Batu Caves”
★★★★★

If you've visiting Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, I have two tips for you. Firstly, get there as early as possible in order to avoid the heat and other tourists. Secondly, after climbing a mountain of stairs, marvelling at the wonders therein, and being stared at by hundreds of monkeys - you're going t…
