Rijksmuseum RouletteFolding X-chair, anonymous, c. 1620 - c. 1650 Since antiquity, this type of folding or X-chair has served as a seat of honour for emperors and bishops. Usually, there was only one such chair in a room – reserved for a person of standing. The front legs and posts are decorated with dolphins and crowned Tritons (mermen: half-men, half-fish). Rijksmuseum RouletteAmsterdam as the Centre of World Trade, Pieter Isaacsz., c. 1604 - c. 1607 This painted harpsichord lid is literally bursting with ambition. Depicted at the left is Amsterdam, personified by the City Maid. The world lies at her feet: in the distance is the African Cape of Good Hope, at the left Asia with the Indonesian archipelago, and at the right America. In the meantime, the Dutch sail en masse to these regions, conquer them, and conduct trade there. Rijksmuseum RouletteThe Saint Elizabeth’s Day Flood, Master of the St Elizabeth Panels, c. 1490 - c. 1495 On the night of 19 November 1421 – the feast day of Saint Elizabeth – much of Holland was flooded. The Dordrecht region was badly hit: 23 villages were submerged and 2,000 people died. The survivors later had an altarpiece made. Rijksmuseum RouletteAcehnese Shield, anonymous, before 1877 This shield resembles those of the Dayak from Borneo. However, it was seized in Aceh (Sumatra). This province fiercely resisted the expansion of the Dutch colonial regime. The label on the shield attests coolly to this dramatic struggle: ‘Shield of the Acehnese, who in Dec. 1876 killed 1st Lieutenant Regensburg in the banteng of Lembu. Rijksmuseum RouletteChrist’s Descent into Limbo, anonymous, c. 1440 These three groups, from a large Crucifixion altar, reveal how colourful most Gothic sculpture originally was. During a recent restoration, small slivers of glass were found in the old pigment; this would have added to the glittering impression of the whole. Rijksmuseum RouletteVenus and Adonis, Bartholomeus Spranger, c. 1585 - c. 1590 Venus, the goddess of love, warns her lover Adonis of the danger of the hunt. In vain, however, for he is killed by a wild boar. On the left, Cupid, the god of love, already gestures in despair. The tall, slender figures with small heads are characteristic of Spranger’s style. Surrounded by abundant plants and flowers, a crowned double-headed eagle bears his coat of arms. Charles was ruler, among others, of Austria, Hungary, Sicily, Spain, Burgundy, and the Low Countries. Until his abdication in 1555, he was the most powerful man in Europe.
