@JessTheUnstill @bohwaz @punkfairie @ajsadauskas @tomiahonen @fuchsiii Exactly...

Coincidentially, that's why #Android (and #iOS) doesn't let users have #root access because billions of devices owned by mostly "#TechIlliterates" that hardly get #SecurityUpdates would be an even bigger risk if they didn't boot a locked-down #ROM image, thus only allowing for #malware in user-privilegued userspace!

Cuz having a mobile OS that shoves everything through #Tor and only allows #userspace-Apps in the form modern web technologies would be a big #security and #privacy gain.

  • Not to mention #amd64 is on it's way out and inevitably they gotta have to transition to supporting #arm64 and eventually #RISCv-#64bit at some point.

@ai6yr @briankrebs OFC this targets #TechIlliterates and the only effective means here are:

  1. Teach #TechLiteracy instead of consumerism.
  2. Mandate #confirmation & #notification - #PopUp|s for every use of #Clipboard (similar to #webcam use by websites)...
  3. Ban #JavaScript - seriously!
  4. Ban #Windows, because it's a #Govware, espechally since #Windows10 and even more so on #Windows11 that is *insecure in every configuration!
  5. Put #TechIlliterates before a system they can't feck up. I.e. @tails_live @tails / #Tails for that reason alone (can't run such commands if they neither got #root nor any #persistent #storage to target).
  6. Normalize the use of @torproject #TorBrowser!
  7. #Teach #tech #literacy instead of #consumerism!
  8. Ban #GAFAMs and their shitty products!
  9. Migrate every #TechIlliterate to #Linux and don't give them administrative privilegues.
  10. Teach tech literacy instead of consumerism!

Ma’alkoush was happy his daughters, Feast and Slaughter, had invited over a few human friends. He left them to it.

“Da-aaad!” Slaughter shouted.

Ma’alkoush hurried into the lounge.

“They’re all ill, like vomiting and stuff!” Slaughter said as he entered the room.

Two human youngsters were groaning in the corner, looking greener than they should. There was the sound of another retching in the bathroom.

Feast said, “It’s like they’ve been cursed, but we didn’t—”

“Or poisoned, maybe? What did you give them?” Ma’alkoush asked.

“Only plant things. Eve is a vegetarian.”

“Some plants are poisonous to humans. You’re only half human. Demon blood protects you.”

He looked at the food on the table. “Did you give them elderberries? That’s definitely a plant humans shouldn’t eat. Not deadly, but very unpleasant.”

Wide-eyed, Slaughter asked, “Even the roots?”

“Yes, even the roots.”

As the building shuddered, the rogue flinched. "Now what? It's not going to stop."

The barbarian hefted his axe. "We'll sell our lives dearly."

"Amateurs." The mage rolled his eyes. "If we know what the creature wants, we can make it leave."

"Huh?"

"What's the #root of its problem?"

"It's hungry."

"There!" The mage beamed. "So we feed it."

The rogue scowled. "That's what we're trying to avoid!"

The orange girl was rooting around the edge of the catio. She wanted in, because she liked Mr. Whiskers. Mr Whiskers thought he kind of liked her. She trotted off briefly and brought him the remains of a mouse she had just caught. He loved her present, so he scrounged for one of his own. Alas! He had the perfect idea. No mice here, but he pranced away and brought back his mother's favorite houseplant, roots clumped with dirt. She loved his gift!

Kiki opened her green eye and scanned the cell. Something was there in the darkness.
A quick diagnostic proved she was secure, #root access impossible without her permission.
She jumped when a silhouette stepped forward.
"Hi, sister." It was Titi.
Stout Didi peeked around Titi's hip, "'Sup?"
"Why do you get to live but we don't?" Pipi whispered in Kiki's ear.
Kiki woke and the lights came up.
"You okay in there?" Jake's voice was comforting. "Keeks?"
She nodded and tried to sleep again.

I had one of those crazy events happen at the beginning of last weekend when I accidentally changed ownership of the /root directory structure. The immediate effect was that I couldn’t use #sudo to do anything as #root. Luckily, the computer did reboot and allowed me to log in directly as root and then I started to change all the ownerships and groups recursively back using #chown.

Just read the paper "The Roots Go Deep", until I suddenly realized something from my teenage days: My first big moment of networking was, when I stopped using a public #DNS resolver and hosted my own recursive resolver in my #homelab (not exposed to the Internet because it was all way too scary back then). The thrill I felt when my own resolver was talking to #root servers and resolving domain names without using any of the large providers was phenomenal. I know, I know, I was a nerd. Yet, I believe this was a shaping moment of my future path. Since then I was amazed by #network protocols and #internet infrastructure.

Funny, how those little side quests while in school can kick off an entire future carrier path.

Some vendors try to prevent you from using your hardware any way you see fit. Some even go as far as to violate the #license. #Fritzbox got sued in Germany and lost and has to comply with #LGPL. Well, we publish all our sources on our #GitLab and give everyone #root account on their device, so I guess we are safe 🤔

AA-App...
