PentaxkeThis was more or less a bucket list for me and at <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/openmonumentendag?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#openmonumentendag</a> I was finally able to visit it. The <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Schans?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Schans</a> of <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Lauwershoek?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Lauwershoek</a> is a schans (literally translated: ramp or skijump) that is part of the <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Enceinte?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Enceinte</a> of <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Antwerp?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Antwerp</a>, a ring of fortifications around the city. Situated about 10km from the river <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Scheldt?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Scheldt</a>, the Schans of Lauwershoek and <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Landmolen?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Landmolen</a> were built as an extra protection for the forts of Steendorp and Haasdonk. PentaxkeThe <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/waterbus?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#waterbus</a> is a <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/shuttle?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#shuttle</a> running the river <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/scheldt?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#scheldt</a> from the village of Hemiksem all the way down into the <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/harbour?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#harbour</a> of <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Antwerp?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Antwerp</a> covering 8 stops in total. Introduced by Port of Antwerp (the port authority) as a commuting alternative (Antwerp is one of the most congested cities in Europe) it is very popular amongst commuters and tourists alike. Recently the Flemish Community took charge of the exploitation and to celebrate, the bridge could be visited during <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/openbedrijvendag?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#openbedrijvendag</a> a yearly event in Flanders where companies give an insight behind the scenes. The (dutch) captain was very friendly and spoke passionately about every aspect of the boat. DHMosquitoFairey Swordfish Mk III, Imperial War Museum, Duxford. This aircraft was built not by Fairey's but by Blackburn Aircraft Ltd. These were known, colloquially, as 'Blackfish' It is in the markings of No 119 Sqn, RAF which used these obsolescent biplanes on nocturnal sorties over the Scheldt estuary in 1945 to hunt down E-boats and minature submaries of the Kreigsmarine.
