The herring spawn has started in some areas on the East coast of Vancouver Island. This photo of sea lions resting in a spawn was taken last year.
Early start for me tomorrow to capture this amazing event. There are still spots available on my photo tours or ask for a private one (details on my website).
The sea lions are here and ready for the herring spawn on the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Sea lions are showing up in big numbers at the moment on the east coast of Vancouver Island. They are here for the herring spawn. Me too!
These two came pretty close to me. I was on my knees at the edge of the water taking photos of ducks when they emerged to check me out.
Steller sea lion on the left and the other one is a California sea lion (identifiable with the ''bump'' on its head).
Sea lion enjoying the herring spawn last year on the east coast of Vancouver Island, BC. This spectacular annual event happens between February and April and peaks in March. It attracts many species, humans included.
I am really looking forward to it.
@KateShaw 's new episode is about elephant seals:
the heaviest pinneped, with some males being nearly elephant sized, and capable of astonishing dives of up to 1,753 meters deep for the northern elephant seal, and 2,388 meters deep for the southern.
... and ... a surprising journey.

Happy 2025! Here is to a great new year. Sharing one of my sea life images - Seal Swirls: https://1-lisas-baker.pixels.com/featured/seal-swirls-lisa-s-baker.html
We had a real fish outta water situation today on #bchwy4 between #PortAlberni and #Tofino. A sea lion found its way up Kennedy Inlet, which connects pretty directly to the large Kennedy Lake. Not sure why she decided to come up on land, let alone wander into the road. Poor guy!
At least the rain kept her cool.

This #sealion was trying to throw itself out of the sea. One empathizes. #photography

The #sealion invasion of #Monterey #California continues. These transient males have been parked on San Carlos Beach for almost a month.
