South of Kyōto City, the major Shintō shrine closest our house is Nagaoka Tenman-gū (長岡天満宮), associated with the presence of the statesman-scholar Fujiwara Michizane (菅原道真) over a thousand years ago in the Heian Period. He was not the only case of being exiled wrongly by the Imperial court, followed by natural disasters, interpreted as the work of his angry ghost, then being deified as the Shintō kami Tenjin (天神) to supplicate his spirit. Thus the shrine is also called Nagaoka Tenjin (長岡天神). Students facing high-stakes exams have traditionally prayed at the many Tenjin shrines to this god of learning. Today, the large shrine grounds provide a place to walk and commune with nature as well as to worship and to hold hopeful events. Now is peak cherry blossom season, so here are four scenes where I often go for contemplative hikes.

I think it's finally time to share more photos of one of my favorite days in Japan, which was a day trip to beautiful, sunny #Kobe :blobmiou: !

Starting with the Kitano Tenman Shrine (北野天満神社). It's quite elevated with a great view over the city. You can get blessings from a priest and there's many small fox figures left by visitors. I think they resemble cats quite a bit. :blobcat:

My latest artwork is a shinto shrine inspired by the town of Sawara, Japan. Also, the first pixel art I've made in Krita on Linux! I could never get Clip Studio Paint to work with Lutris so knowing I can transfer this workflow is awesome.

📷 Cuando asistí a un congreso en Miyazaki (octubre de 2018) pude escaparme una mañana al popular «santuario en la cueva», un santuario sintoísta en Nichinan (al sureste de Kyūshū) llamado Udo-jingū (鵜戸神宮).

Que buen recuerdo de ese viaje! (pese al tifón Kong-rey que me obligó a pasar un día extra en Tokio 😅)

Un típico santuario japonés de madera con las paredes pintadas de rojo y adornadas con detalles dorados, relieves en la madera, techos curvados, etc. La particularidad de este templo es que parece surgir de una cueva (el suelo está cubierto por losas de piedra pero el techo está tal cual era la cueva). Prácticamente no hay espacio entre el techo del santuarii y la piedra de la cueva...
