In this case, the #BoomSupersonic #XB1 took advantage of a #physics phenomenon called the Mach cutoff. Vandenberg SFB Guardians and Airmen will support the rescheduled SpaceX Falcon 9 launch of NASA’s SPHEREx Observatory and PUNCH satellites from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) Monday, March 10.

Liftoff is targeted for 8:10 p.m. PT.

About eight minutes after launch, following stage separation, the first stage will return to base and land at Landing Zone-4 at Vandenberg SFB creating one or more local sonic booms.

There is the possibility that residents of and visitors to Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the launch, but what residents experience will depend on weather and other conditions.

During its two-year mission, the SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) Observatory will collect data on more than 450 million galaxies and more than 100 million stars to improve our understanding of how the universe evolved while also searching for water and oxygen molecules. The PUNCH (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere) satellites will observe the Sun and its environment to help scientists better understand the effect of solar winds on our solar system.

I’ve been following “Boom Supersonic” and “Tokamak Energy” on the internet for years now, and it’s great to see the breakthrough from Boom today. Hopefully Overture will be a lot nearer, and supersonic passenger flights will soon be flying again!

Vandenberg Guardians and Airmen are scheduled to support a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch of 20 Starlink satellites, including 13 with Direct to Cell capabilities, to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East, Wednesday, December 4th.

The four-hour launch window opens at 4:06 p.m. PT. If needed, an additional launch opportunity is available on Thursday, December 5.
