The Mars Climate Orbiter was built in 1998 by
NASA and Lockheed in partnership. Lockheed used Imperial units in their software, while NASA used the metric system like normal sane people everywhere else. Nobody noticed this discrepancy.
Well, they definitely noticed when the $50 million probe didn't enter into a stable orbit like it was supposed to, and instead crashed spectacularly into the surface of Mars.

The Blue Peacock was a nuclear landmine.
Built by the British in the 1950s, it was designed to be buried along the German-Soviet border in case the Soviets invaded Europe. It would also contain live chickens to keep it warm. When the project was declassified on April 1st, 2004, the public thought it was an April Fools joke.

Platypuses glow under ultraviolet light, and biologists have no idea why. This is in addition to being duck-billed, web-footed, beaver-tailed mammals that lay eggs, have venom glands and elecro-reception. At this point I think they're just dropping hints that they're probably from another planet.

The board game Monopoly was invented by Lizzie Magie as a way to demonstrate that monopolies in economics do not work. Charles Darrow basically stole the idea, took full credit and got rich selling the game. When Magie was revealed as the true creator, she was paid just $500. Meanwhile, Darrow went on to become the first millionaire game designer in history.
