Spannend wars allemal.
Und ich fuhr noch zur Cebit.
Ach ja, Opa erzählt wieder vom Kriech.

Morning tests...

The story behind: a client is considering moving all the new mini PCs in their office to Linux (no BSD is compatible at the moment), since they mainly use web apps and LibreOffice. This client once told me they loved Transport Tycoon, back in the days, so I’m preparing an openSUSE Leap image. I’m sure they’ll be fascinated by this screenshot and the demo installation.

This week's Linux and FOSS news:

LINUX NEWS

Linux kernel turns 34 years old (as of the announcement of the project):
9to5linux.com/happy-34th-birth
(Happy birthday, Linux! You're my home since I opened my eyes and left my digital enslavement cell)

GNOME executive director Steven Deobald steps down, Allan Day takes on the role:
phoronix.com/news/Steven-Deoba
(That's really sad, based on what I heard, Steven has been one of the best executive directors in the past couple of years, he had pretty solid plans which would greatly help the foundation come out of the crisis they face right now. Hope Allan will continue Steven's work, implement his plans in practice. It's pretty weird though, why all executive directors leave after a few months, I think the community would deserve some explanation about what's going on beyond the scenes, since the GNOME project is mainly driven by the community, we are your stakeholders, GNOME.)

KDE Plasma 6.5 gets saved clipboard items feature after being requested for 22 years:
ostechnix.com/plasma-6-5-saved
(Wait, they are also doing the "GNOME thing" and make users wait that much? lol)

Ubuntu 25.10 final snapshot released, beta planned to 18 September, stable release to 9 October, will include experimental TPM-backed full disk encryption, GNOME Xorg session dropped, sudo-rs, GNOME 49, Chrony v4.7 instead of systemd-timesyncd, etc.:

Fedora 43 features delayed to 44: CMake 4.0 packages, change for CMake to use the Ninja generator by default, hardlinking of identical /usr files in packages by default, and more:
phoronix.com/news/Fedora-43-Ch

Agama 17 OS installer released, will be available for SUSE Linux Enterprise 16, with better representation of wired network connections, improvements to the storage user interface, more options on the OS registration page, allow skipping the SELinux configuration, etc.:

(more Linux and FOSS news in comments)

One thing I appreciate about the upcoming 16 is they're doing away with the SP vs minor versions thing between SLES and Leap.

I'm surprised there's no mention of "ALP" at all in this announcement.

Full SELinux support out of box (and I assume NetworkManager will be default) makes this a very welcome upgrade, IMO.

@roman78 @doctator @ubuntu shure, but it's a pain in the ass to setup, and you need like big ass Windows Server and stuff to make it actually work incl. applications.

  • And since Windows doesn't have proper user permissions managment and almost all applications assume they get admin rights, that's bricking peoples' workflows.

And even if one is.willing to go through all those hoops, is way worse, more expensive, less flexible and overall painful compared to the straight pricings of , and even ...

/ : I think it's the right call for @gnome to "Stop being a mad scientist" and simply offload a lot of [quite security-critical] stuff onto .

  • After all both are being bankrolled mostly by the big 3 distros and neither nor nor are willing to spend money on essentially redundant work if they can avoid it...

Tho @BrodieOnLinux is wrong re: "Linux is " because technically (if we take in any -esque system into account)!

  • That being said, it does necessitate extra work by |s to run .

@ml I've heard of , but lets just say the whole "it's not !" when it clearly is a scheme is kinda off-putting to me...

That doesn't mean they are bad - far from it.

I just use because it's very easy to walkthrough when it comes to getting up and running with them.
