A fun thing to do on my computer/phone in a few spare minutes

I take a quick look at the “Explore” tab of the Marginalia search engine. Marginalia is a small, traditional search engine that indexes traditional websites, by which I mean mostly sites that are statically generated and not “single-page applications” (SPAs), things like blogs, wikis, non-corporate news, instruction manuals, free-to-read works of fiction, web comics, and so on. The “Explore” tab shows you some random selection of indexed web pages.

While I don’t read any comment on Hacker News, I’m really pleased by the quality of exchanges on lobste.rs, also in private messages.

It seems that the invite-only mechanism and strong moderation to keep stuff on topic is working well. Thank you lobsterians…

PS: yes, I can invite you if you ask nicely and send me an email address. I can also invite you on the smaller and cozier tilde.news (where I would like to see more discussions).

Today, only #ActivityPub does that. Only the fedi qualifies.

@wjmaggos minor correction: not only ActivityPub qualifies as “fediverse.” There are also the #Tildeverse , a.k.a. #PubNix , which are public-access servers, usually with SSH login. There is also the #SelfHosting movement, although I personally feel this doesn’t count if you are using Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to host your website. These otherwise qualify as #fediverse as well, I would say.

Alright, time to talk about the #JG #tilde

We're doing a lot of stuff with email right now, and I like that.

I still need to get local IRC (and probably a matrix<->IRC bridge) or local Matrix and a CLI client set up.

But I'm most interested in providing some tools for public and semi-public in character messages and planning.

I'm tempted to do gotosocial, but that feels like A Lot and also The Wrong Thing.

So now I'm trying to reason around a BBS that's written entirely in bash + dialog and works entirely on text files.

I could probably put together a quick and dirty version in half an hour (but I'm rustier than I've been in years, so maybe that half an hour is actually four hours?

and/but do I really want a quick and dirty version?)

If you use Vial (get.vial.today) to configure your keyboard on macOS and you need to map a key to backtick/tilde, mapping it to the backtick/tidle key in the Vial keyboard won’t work (you’ll get the section/plus-minus key). Instead, map it to the following code:

KC_NONUS_BSLASH

(At least that’s what worked for me on the British English Mac layout.)

VialHomeVial is an open-source cross-platform (Windows, Linux and Mac) GUI and a QMK fork for configuring your keyboard in real time.

the mods on tilde.chat irc are fucking assholes who literally blocked the word "fedipact" from being allowed to be said in chat

i've given this place so many chances but they never stop finding sneaky ways to be assholes to me

WHAT the FUCK

EDIT: it was for NO REASON btw. just because they were annoyed with it being in my display name whenever i'd post links to my posts on here

Even though Unix existed before DOS and the command line was far more important to Unix users than Windows users, text user interfaces (TUI) never really took off among #Unix or #Linux text editors.

This is a fun piece exploring why even though #emacs or #vim are incredibly powerful, their interfaces are junk compared to 1980s DOS programming environments. blogsystem5.substack.com/p/the

There is one Unix editor that is in this tradition though: #Tilde.

Okay, I'm starting down the road to #tilde town.

(but not tilde.town, as that's a different thing.)

The guide I used to get started years ago is long gone and would have been wildly out of date.

Do you have a good list of general resources that a Tilde admin might want to consider?

(I could almost certainly get something workable up and running from memory at this point in my life, but I want to make choices based on what has worked for others.)

Planning on setting up a #tilde server in the next month or two. I need your suggestions for software to install on it.

I want the WEIRD stuff. I am not talking about your standard "install all the shells you can get your hands on" kind of deal. I want strange, funky console applications that barely anyone has laid eyes on in 20 years. Whatcha got?

(Please boost)

hello, hello! just posting a short #introduction! again... after moving instances. trust me, this one will stick. it's gotta!

my name is daniel, but cool people call me taco. most places online i'm known as `@takouhai`. here i'm slick and i snagged up @taco, so you know i had to switch to this instance. 🌮

i'm a #sysadmin / #sre who currently lives in #morgantown, #westvirginia. i like #gaming, #anime, #music, #tech, etc. you'll probably see me post about #linux stuff a lot. 🐧

my current #tilde pages are at envs.net/~taco/ and tilde.club/~taco/.

i'm also #latino / #latine ! mi sangre viene de la #grancolombia. i'm bilingual, #en / #es. #ecuador #venezuela #colombia 🇪🇨🇨🇴🇻🇪

Your friendly moderation and administration team here at tilde.zone have decided to finally set up a role account for the instance.

That's me! Hi! 👋

We're going to try make sure that we make (or at least boost) moderation related comments on here going forward.

You can follow me, or tag me in stuff you want the whole team to get notified about, rather than pinging us individually. That way you don't need to remember who to tag in, and it doesn't matter who is active or not.

This account is now also listed as the instance owner on tilde.zone/about in case you forget.

You can also find us on our IRC network in the #tilde.zone channel. Check out tilde.chat for connection information.

@82MHz Tildes are communities using Unix shell servers. See tilde.wiki/wiki/Main_Page for more.

Basicly you ssh into a server with many users and do whatever you want with it. Usually there’s IRC, email and public_html available plus many other services for having fun and communicating with others.

The name comes from the “~” character which gets prepended to the username in a users website URL on the server, e.g.: tilde.team/~ryuu/

If you like lobste.rs but feel it’s a bit too rigid/clean-cut/apolitical, if you want to read/share more social/societal analysis of technology, more #smalltech endeavours, more #permacomputing and tech-minimalist stuff, please consider reading and contributing to tilde.news/

I find it awesome but we are not enough there. I’m also sometime looking for alternatives to the hackernews-venture-capitalist vibe.

Send me a PM with your email to receive an invitation.

Both the tilde (~) character and the caret (^) characters are odd characters —

As they both probably made more sense on typewriters (including the teletypewriters, i.e., teletypes) — where you could write one character over another character.

And could use both of these to transform a regular character of the alphabet into an accented one.

But given that they exist — they are open to be used for novel purposes.

I think it would have been useful if a practice like these would have adopted for links — for #URL , #URI , and other conventions for creating links.

For example —

^http.//example.com/

(Note the caret (^) at the beginning.)

Although I'm not sure what would be a good choice for a magic-prefix character.

I just used the caret character (^) because it is sometimes used to point to stuff — just like a link points.
