Before the 'Phoenix Hall' (officially known as the Amida-dō, and commonly called this right up to 1680) is a stone lantern that has survived since the temple's foundation.

At the height of its power Byōdō-in's precincts boasted 26 halls, 7 pagodas, and an elaborate garden.

The stone lantern before the Phoenix Hall dates to the founding of the temple.

The Phoenix Hall, one of Japan's most iconic buildings.

The original main hall stood closer to the river, but in 1053 the current Hōō-dō was constructed as part of an 'earthly paradise'.

Such was Byōdō-in's beauty that a famous saying went ..."If you are dubious about the existence of Amida's Pure Land, pray at the Temple in Uji".

After Michinaga passed away in 1027 the 'Uji Palace' (宇治殿) came into possession of his son Yorimichi (藤原頼通 992–1074).

When Yorimichi turned 60 years old he was inspired to transform the sprawling site into a temple, and made the priest Myōson (明尊 971-1063) first abbot.

Likely beginning as a summer retreat for Minamoto-no-Tōru (源融 822-95), the man who possibly inspired Murasaki Shikibu's "Hikaru Genji", the property passed through the hands of Emperor Uda, Minamoto-no-Shigenobu (源重信 - Uda's grandson), and on to the powerful Regent Fujiwara-no-Michinaga.

Statue of Murasaki Shikibu at Uji. The last chapters in 'The Tale of Genji' are set in the area about Byodo-in.

Ujigami-jinja is thought to be the oldest extant shrine building in Japan.

A SLICE OF PARADISE

Byōdō-in's (平等院) Hōō-dō (鳳凰堂 'Phoenix Hall') was completed in 1053.

Once completely surrounded by Aji-ga-ike pond, the stretch of water helped protect the building from fires in 1336 and 1483 that completely destroyed the rest of the temple.

The 'Phoenix Hall' features on the 10 yen coin, and is one of the most important extant pieces of Heian period architecture in Japan.

Byodo-in's 'Aji-ga-ike' pond helped protect the 'Phoenix Hall' from fire. The rest of the temple's vast complex burnt in various conflagrations.

Ingen (隱元隆琦) is thought to have introduced many things to Japan from the mainland, including green beans, watermelons, lotus roots, the Ming Dynasty style of writing, Buddhist cuisine, and sencha tea.
He would deeply influence Japanese society as well as religion.

Manpuku-ji (萬福寺) in Uji, home to the Ōbaku Zen sect (黄檗宗), was founded in 1661 by the Chinese monk Yinyuan Longqi (隱元隆琦 aka Ingen Ryūki 1592-1673). It is considered to be Japan's greatest Chinese-style temple.

CHINESE LANTERN FESTIVAL

Kyōto has many light-up events during the autumn, but Manpuku-ji's is something to behold.

As one might expect from one of the country's few Chinese-style temples, the colourful lanterns are heavily influenced by festivals on the mainland.

Courtly ladies enjoy cherry blossoms by moonlight. These stunning lanterns are accompanied by music played from concealed speakers.

The paths of Manpuku-ji are lined with lanterns. This is the rear view of heavenly maidens riding clouds.

The green tea we know today is all thanks to Nagatani Sōen (永谷宗円 1681-1778), a tea merchant from Yuyadani. Over 15 years he developed new techniques for producing tea leaves, transforming previously crude brown leaves into the flavorful green leaves we know today️

The home of Nagatani Soen, preserved in the heart of Yuyadani.
