#Salesforce announced this week that it’s planning $500 million of AI-related investments in #SaudiArabia. Like the #USA, Saudi Arabia—a major oil and gas exporter—is looking to capitalize on its abundance of wealth and fossil fuels to become an #AI superpower, including in a $100 billion initiative called #ProjectTranscendence.

The New Republic · Why Tech Companies Are Joining the GOP-Oil AllianceThe big bet on artificial intelligence has turned tech billionaires from vocal climate advocates into Trump toadies.
I had a change to go visit Queen Elizabeth II, which is permanently docked at Port Rashid, Dubai.

They have transformed it into a 4-star hotel, so you can book and experience it yourself.

A ‘Cop of peace’? How can #authoritarian, #HumanRights-trashing #Azerbaijan possibly host that?

"The #ClimateCrisis is just as much about protecting human rights as it is about protecting the #Climate and #biodiversity. You cannot claim to care about #ClimateJustice if you ignore the sufferings of oppressed and #colonised people today. We cannot pick and choose whose human rights to care for, and who to leave behind. Climate justice means justice, safety and freedom for everyone."

by #GretaThunberg, November 11, 2024

"Cop meetings have proven to be #greenwashing conferences that legitimise countries’ failures to ensure a livable world and future and have also allowed authoritarian regimes like #Azerbaijan and the two previous hosts – the #UnitedArabEmirates and #Egypt – to continue violating human rights.

"#Genocides, #ecocides, #famines, #wars, #colonialism, rising inequalities and an escalating #ClimateCollapse are all interconnected crises that reinforce each other and lead to unimaginable suffering. While #humanitarian crises are unfolding in #Palestine, #Yemen, #Afghanistan, #Sudan, #Congo, #Kurdistan, #Lebanon, #Balochistan, #Ukraine, #NagornoKarabakh / #Artsakh, and many, many other places, humanity is also breaching the 1.5C #GreenhouseGas emissions limit, with no signs of real reductions in sight.

"Instead, the opposite is taking place – last year, global emissions reached an all-time high. #Heat records have been shattered, and this year is 'virtually certain' to be the hottest year ever recorded, with unprecedented #ExtremeWeather events pushing the planet further into uncharted territory. The destabilisation of the biosphere and the natural #ecosystems we depend on to survive is leading to untold human suffering and further accelerating the #MassExtinction of flora and fauna."

The Guardian · A ‘Cop of peace’? How can authoritarian, human rights-trashing Azerbaijan possibly host that?By Greta Thunberg

#GretaThunberg Won't Attend #UNClimateTalks in 'Yet Another #Authoritarian #PetrolState'

"We can't legitimize #COP meetings in their current form," Thunberg said. "The last three years, they've taken place in authoritarian regimes, and holding them in such places leads nowhere."

by Olivia Rosane
Nov 05, 2024

"Thunberg expressed concerns about #Azerbaijan's record of stifling internal #dissent as well as its ethnic cleansing of Armenians. The U.N. summit comes a little over a year after Azerbaijani forces entered the disputed, ethnic #Armenian-controlled territory of #NagornoKarabakh, prompting most ethnic Armenians in the area to flee across the border to Armenia. Armenia told the International Court of Justice in April that Azerbaijan had 'completed' #EthnicCleansing in the territory and was 'erasing all traces of ethnic Armenians' presence' there.

"At the same time, Thunberg added her voice to the many #environmental advocates who have called out Azerbaijan for planning to expand its #FossilFuel production. Azerbaijan's selection was especially controversial because it came on the heels of the #UnitedArabEmirates' hosting of #COP28, which also prompted backlash due to the country's #HumanRights record and reliance on #OilAndGas. Both COPs also came under fire for selecting presidents with close ties to state-run oil companies.

"'It is a slap in the face to all the people who are suffering from the #ClimateEmergency and from the repression and oppression of the Azerbaijani regime,' Thunberg said."
