If the Meadowside Granary (demolished in 2002) could have been kept and turned into flats, it would have looked amazing, as well as being something unique to Glasgow. This Is My GlasgowIt seems plans are being drawn up by a developer to demolish the building in the foreground right of this shot to construct student accommodation. It's the 1930s former City Bakery building, and while currently not listed, it is nonetheless an important building for the city, and a rather stylish one at that. It's also still in use, so there seems no justifiable reason to allow it to be demolished. This Is My GlasgowThe towers and spires rising above the sandstone tenements of the West End of Glasgow. These types of views are quite special, and distinctively Glaswegian. This Is My GlasgowI get rather annoyed every time I walk past this abandoned construction site in Partick. Mean to be 45 flats, it was started in 2020, but the company behind it folded in 2021. This Is My GlasgowTo solve this, there needs to be much stricter enforcement of laws which require buildings to be adequetely insured to cover actual re-building costs, with much higher penalties for those who do not properly insure their building. This Is My GlasgowGlasgow has a problem with fire. Way too many buildings burn down, but what I want to talk about is what happens afterwards. All to often fire-damaged buildings, like this one at Albert Cross in Pollokshields, are simply left in a burned out state until they have decayed so much that they have be demolished. Why? This Is My GlasgowUnfortunately, it was badly damaged in a fire in 2018, ending almost 150 years as an entertainment venue. The then owners presumably got an insurance pay out for this, but rather than try to rebuilt it, it has been left to decay in its fire damaged state for the last six years. Now a developer wants to demolish it and replace it with a generic-looking, non-descript student housing development.
