And because of #idiotmath.

Sorry for a tiktok link but I think the quality of the explanation justifise it. For those who are unwilling to view tiktok the presenter very clearly explains the real math that went into the fatally flawed logic & matches it to the seemingly complex, but actually embarrassing logic. Bottom line is that #Trump expects a 1:1 #tradebalance with every country. As if #Vietnam could ever manage that...

Walking through an #OldNavy store (budget clothing in USA) & noting that everything I'm checking is made in #Vietnam or #Bangladesh. I don't remember what the #tariff on Bangladesh was but 96% rings a bell for Vietnam. Old Navy, like most retailers in their space, has something like 7-10% margin. Prices here will effectively double leaving #lowincome & #middleincome folks in a pinch and Old Navy and similar companies in trouble. Everyone is in trouble.

To Lam, Vietnam’s top leader, in Hanoi last month. He was one of the first world leaders to reach out to President Trump after details of the new tariffs were announced.

As #landmines are in the news recently, a story about a rat who has uncovered more than 100 landmines and pieces of unexploded ordinance in #Cambodia. Unfortunately there are millions more in the country, a legacy of the #Vietnam war and other conflicts. A doctor I know used to live in the region- he told me innocent children are often the victims. But it's left to charities to clear up the mess

After delivering a potted #economic history of the country in which he bizarrely claimed that the #GreatDepression would have been avoided if high tariffs had been in place, #Trump announced that “reciprocal tariffs” would go into effect on April 9th, w/rates of 34% on goods imported from #China, 24% on #Japan, & 20% on the #EU. Some of the highest rates were reserved for export-led developing countries in #Asia: 46% on #Vietnam, 48% on #Laos, & 49% on #Cambodia.

Tiny #Vietnam

Graciously hosts that orange shit gibbon’s offshore romantic get together with the infant king of North Korea,

And look what it got - 46% #tariffs slapped on it. The highest tariff rate of all.

Meanwhile, the rate of #Trump supporters amongst the immigrant Vietnamese population is astronomical.

The more you love him, the more he’ll fuck you.

Some dude appears to have reverse engineered the formula Trump is using to determine each country’s tariffs:

> trade_deficit_of_country_X / imports_from_country_X

The trade deficit of a given country is just imports minus exports. Example:

* US Imports from Vietnam: $136.6 bn
* US exports to Vietnam: $13.1 bn
* US trade deficit w/Vietnam: $136.6 - $13.1 = $123.5 bn
* $123.5 / $136.6 = 90% tariffs

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen, except for the fact that Taiwan's existence is acknowledged as a real country.
